My corn snake has recently.. within the past 3 weeks, become very aggressive. It started when i took him out to feed him one day and he struck me for the first time (he's about 8 months old) Well i figured hes just hungry and it didn't hurt so i fed him his fuzzy. When my husband took him to put him away he struck my husband twice. we always wash our hands before handling.

So i figured he's probably jsut ready to move up on food and not getting enough. I tried a hopper and he couldn't get it down so we've been feeding 2 fuzzies for the past 3 weeks. While he hasn't bit me again since then, he has become very aggressive in general and will get in the strike position a lot. Today he was in his rubbermaid container and had just finished his second fuzzy and my puppy was just sitting by the container watching (the cats and puppy always watch the snakes eat but i they don't mess with the container) and Salazar struck at the side of the plastic container towards my puppy!!!!!

ANy reason for this aggressive behaivor?
 
How often do you handle salazar? Sometimes this explains why they strike. But i wouldn't know.
 
Its breeding season. It amy be just that. My biggest boy is zooming around his cage and refusing to eat.
 
The guy at the pet store also said its breeding season. He also suggested i try feeding him twice a week instead of once a week...like every 4-5 days instead of every 7. Becuase he is really active after he eats and by thetime its time to feed he's ravenous. He gets 2 fuzzies... and will be moving up to hoppers soon... probably in the next week or so. But ive been reading about corns and their fast metabolism and im thinking that may be the problem.

We always wait at least 24-48 hours after feeding to handle. He has only ever regurged on me once and thats when i fed him while he was in the blue and he shed the very same day!


Any other suggestions? Comments?
 
I wouldn't expect an 8 month old to be in breeder mode, but I suppose it's possible. Most likely he's in feeding mode and when you reach in to get him out of the feeder box (I assume you feed in a seperate container) he's striking at you. Mine have done the same. Usually once they figure out there's no more food coming, they don't strike anymore, but if they are aggressive feeders a lot of the time they will stay in the mode for a bit. It can take them several minutes to calm down from feeding.

As far as striking at your puppy or cat, You should realize that this is a natural response to what your snake percieves as a predator and/or threat. I mean no offense when I say this, but it is important to remember that in real life animals do not get along in a happy shiny world as Disney would have us all believe. I would suggest making it impossible for your cat and puppy to have access to your snakes container. Good luck.
 
No, he was biting me when i took him out of HIS home... not out of the feeding cage. After he eats i can pick him up but one time i put him back and it was AFTER he ate and he struck at the glass 3 times!

I think he's just not getting enough to eat and i need to handle and feed him more often.

LOL... the snakes are in a sealed container when they eat. And i watch them while they eat. I NEVER leave them unattended when they eat and the cats/dog can't get in the container. what happened was the cat was sitting BESIDE the container on the OUTSIDE and the snake struck at the plastic towards them.
Im not stupid, i know that a snake sees and smells them, but i saw this behavior as very aggressive since the snaek had already ate


it makes sense that he snake is still in feed mode after eating and thats why he soemtimes strikes AFTER but he usually strikes BEFORE i feed which is waht had confused me but as i said, more handling in between meals and more feeding and ill update with what happens in a week or so.
