My wife and I have a friend who caught this snake on his front porch. We are sure it is a corn, but unsure as to what morph. We know it isn't a normal because it has NO red. We thought it was an anery A, but it doesn't have the tell-tale yellow around it's head. So.....anery B?? Or something else?? It looks to be less than a year old, and male we believe. Need some input plz. Here are a few pics:

additional info

in the pics, he looks very brown, but in better lighting and in real life, he is more gray. Sorry the pic quality is so poor...usually the pics I take are much better. :(

can't really tell...

Looking at the emoryi versus the corn, I really can't tell all that much. I was under the assumption that we lived a little too far east in texas for it to be an emoryi, as those are generally located in the western 2/3 of the state. I guess it could be, but like I said, I really can't tell. How can you tell the difference anyway? Is there anything specific we can look for? The head is a bit bigger than we would have expected in a corn...is that typical in an emoryi?

hindsight is 20/20

good morning all...reviewing those pics, I realize just how bad they are now! I will take better ones today in natural lighting and hopefully get the focus adjusted correctly on my camera. Thank you for looking, though. Please keep an eye out for those new pics today.

Texas rat . . .

It's not a classic looking specimen, but the belly patterns say it's not Emory's or Kisatchie. The band between the eyes also bespeaks obsoletus instead of emoryi or slowinskii.

Looks like a wild anery but I dont believe they occur in Texas, from what ive read.
Maybe a cross breed, corn with close related rat snake could be the most likely thing.
:wavey:

I second Don's statement. I hatched out 20 Texas Rats last year, and they all look like anery a corns but start to get browns and more black in. That is a nice clean looking Texas Rat in my opinion.

also, Texas is too far west to find any corn snakes. The closest you will gind is a Texas Rat.

did your friend catch this in texas? also, where at in texas are you? this might help a little more. i am obviously no expert, and there are plenty of those on here.................but looking at my "texas snakes" field guide, it leans towards a darker version of a southwestern rat. whatever it is, it's seem to be very nice looking. please post pics when you can and welcome to the forum/addiction. :wavey:

Thank you

Yes our friend caught it in Texas, just east of Houston where the burbs meet the country. Thank you for all your input. We plan on keeping her and raising her up. We also thought that she may not be wild but in fact someones pet that had gotten loose or was disposed of by letting it go "free" since it was found in an apartment complex. We will wait and see what happens with it, but so far if it is a texas rat it's one of the best looking specimens we have seen so far. It's amazing coloration was the one thing that made us think it was not a texas rat since the ones we have seen have a "dirty wash" look to them. Again thank you for all your help and we will post more pics soon.

Unfortunately, the dirty wash will come with age. As a Texas rat ages, thwy start getting browns and a little yellow. The black stripe across the eyes will enlarge and eventually engulf the head turning it completely black. the body will take on a dark coloration, and have bits of reds, yellows, and blacks in it with a dirty brown through out. They may not look like the prettiest snakes, they they are get looking in their own way.

How is his attitude? is he strikey and bitey? Most texas rats are like that.

Her attitude varies. When I handle her, she's fine as long as you don't wave your hand in front of her face. She just kind of cruises around in my hands and she likes to rub a bit. She is easily agitated by my glasses, and if she sees them, she will puff up at them, but other than that, she has been fine. Granted, when we got her last night she was very upset since the person who caught her put her in a clear container inside a house with 3 cats - and they were all staring at her and pawing at the container. So she was probably feeling very defensive at that time. We had her out long enough last night to take those pics, but we want to give her some time to calm down and relax. I'm sure she was so stressed out!

Samples . . .

Here are a couple of typical neonate Texas rats. These are the "normal" byproducts of our pair that produces axanthics, albinos and leucistics.

They're shy to show their ...uh...undersides. Ya hafta persuade 'em with constraint. If I had a third hand, I coulddah stretched it out to show the belly pattern. I'm handicapped like that.

i guess sometimes you have to treat them like kids................."when i say settle down and be still, i mean it" :grin01:

New (better) pics!

okay guys...here they are. Sorry it took so long, but I had a long day at work, then I think there's some unwritten rule that states you must go to Wal-Mart when you least feel like going and when it's least convenient, right? LOL! Anyway, you'll notice we fed her today, and if you look really hard, you MAY be able to see one of three wounds we noticed the cats inflicted on her. Poor baby had such a hard day yesterday! It took a little persuasion to get her to feed on a pinkie. I had to force her mouth open with the side of a Q-tip, then I slid the pinkie in, and once she tasted it, that was the end of the story, as you can plainly see! LOL! Hopefully she'll continue to feed well, and I completely agree with everyone who has said she's a Texas Rat Snake - cause we looked at different pics online - including the ones everyone has so generously "donated," and that's pretty much exactly what she looks like! Thanks so much for helping us identify her! So without further ado:

This first one is a regular full-body pic

The second is a middle-belly pic where you can see she just ate :)
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f79/TX_GamerChick/DSC00350.jpg

This one is a lower-belly pic that shows off some great color and iridesence (I know I spelled that wrong - sorry)
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f79/TX_GamerChick/DSC00351.jpg

This last one is the best head shot I could get. For some reason, my camera doesn't like pictures of snakes to be in focus. Dunno what the deal is...
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f79/TX_GamerChick/TexasRatSnake.jpg

Again, thanks for everyone's input! Now...what do I do about those wounds of hers? They don't look too serious. Should I just let nature and time heal them? Thanks in advance for any advice!

A little off-topic...but I had to!

By the way, Don (I am assuming SoderbergD is Mr. Soderberg of South Mountain Reptiles) - thanks for the blizzard and the creamsicle okeetee (we bought them at the ETHS herp show) They are eating twice a week and are both complete pigs! They are beautiful babies, and we are so pleased. We just know they are gonna be smokin adults! Thanks again! Here are pics of them. They ate today as well! LOL!

Here are a few pics of the blizzard. Every one I took made her look SO GOOD! But of course they still don't truly do her justice. Notice how she has hardly any kind of pattern as young as she is. Imagine what she'll look like in a couple years! :D

Here are a few pics of the creamsicle okeetee. Notice how bright his orange is! My hubby and I are so proud!

We  to the cornsnake king! Thank you for adding so much color to our collection!

Oops...correction

I accidentally referred to the creamsicle okeetee as a "he" in my last post, but she's a SHE! Sorry bout that! Also, forgot to mention, we named the blizzard "Jadis" after the white witch in Chronicles of Narnia - although her temperament is awesome. She's not a witch, but she'll be VERY white! We haven't come up with a name for the creamsicle okeetee as of yet. When we find one, I guess we'll let you know. Thanks again, Mr. Soderberg!

Glad that we got to the bottom of your Texas Rat snake. And that blizzard and Cream look awesome.
