Feeder fish?

I personally wouldn't know. I'd personally stay with mice. But some one in here will give you better advice.

Someone once told me corn snakes could eat feeder fish. Is this true?

Welcome to the forum. I'd be very surprised if you could even get a corn to eat fish consistently. In the wild, they eat rodents, birds, and lizards. I have no idea how much fat is on a feeder goldfish, but I'm guessing that it can't be much. I'd go with sbourget's suggestion, and stick with mice. :)

You wouldn't want to anyway.

I used to have a water snake and fed it fish. It ate these little fozen things ... dunno what they were but they cam in a block and I just used to break a few off and leave them in it's water dish.

Anyway, the point is, snake poo - from a snake fed on fish - is CONSIDERABLY smellier than the snake poo when the snake is fed on rodents ... take it from me. :puke01:

Corns CAN eat fish, but only as a last resort I think. Lizards, mice, rats, etc. in the wild are their preferred diet. If you want a snake that eats fish, get a garter.

I have a garter and he used to eat feeder guppies (the feeder goldfish are BAD for them), nightcrawlers (red wigglers are toxic), and a piece of trout filet. They can all have can have parasites, fungus, and other yucky stuff, (plus the grocery trout might actually have bleach on it). So now I have him eating pinkies just like my corns. He eats anything, the little piggy.

Yep I have a cousin who has a garter snake. He spent a lotta time getting it to eat pinkies as there far better for them.As kimbyra says there is a lotta crap in fish you don't want your snake getting.I would just stick to rodents mate.I also keep tropical fish and you outta see some of the treatments you have to add to the tank, were talking really toxic stuff.

I have a garter and a corn snake. the garter has messier poo and sometimes it can be a nightmare trying to find healthy live fish for it. i've resorted to sometimes giving him canned sardines when i cant find live guppies or rosy reds that arent infested with ich or other diseases. i've tried to raise my own feeder fish but not with much luck. i have aquarium fish, but for whatever reason, rosy reds and guppies do not survive long in my tanks. nor do they breed well.
my garter is way too small to eat even a pinkie. and i'm not going to chop up a pinkie for him. he might just be able to down the tail or a foot...thats about it.

Hi!
Try nightcrawlers/earthworms. (not red wigglers, they're toxic.) You can cut them in half or third if you need to. Also by a trout (or ocean perch) fillet, cut in small pieces, and it stays good in the freezer for quite some time.

when i was like 11 and had garter snakes i would just put a dozen feeder goldfish in their water bowl and they would eat them all in one sitting. never had a problem with it, snakes never got sick.

I'm going to agree 100% with that statement. We kept a pair of garters that ate shiners and feeder fish, and the resulting poop was beyond funky smelling ;*(

I had a corn that wouldn’t eat. I tried pinkies, mouse/rat tails and anoles. Nothing worked except feeder goldfish. After the 1st shed it started taking down pinkies only if I rubbed it against a fish… eventually it started getting use to eating the pinkies w/o scenting it.

So… IMHO use feeder fish ONLY as a last resort and try feeding it rodents a.s.a.p.

well my garter eats pinkies aswell.. but he by far prefers a dozen "rosy reds" a week :) and there easy to get around here because they are a popular fishing bait!

Feeding gold fish can KILL your snake. Gold fish at pet stores carry disease and are rarely fed the proper amount. If fish is a last resort tham mabe guppies would be better.

Actuly any fish you get from a pet store has the potential for paratsite/diseases wether it be guppy, feeder koi, or a $75 dollar pleco. Almost all pet store feeders are bought in wholesale, and while many pet stores may observe their fish for such problems, feeders sell rapidly and the warning signs may go unnoticed.

Although i am new to world of corn snakes, a close friend who has raised reptiles for quite some time warned me against feeding fish to snakes who do not normaly eat fish. Reason being, if the snake should swallow the fish backwards (due to not having the natural knowlege a fish eating snakes has), the spines from the fishes fins can drag along the inside of the snake causing lacerations.

Although i have no first hand knowlege of this, the warning seemed logical.

guppies and rosy reds carry disease as well. when i get feeders for my garter i look for signs of ich and fungus. and i go to pet stores that care about their feeders. most pet stores dont. if the feeder tank is full of dead fish, i dont buy any from that tank.
the main reason not to feed anything goldfish=they have NO nutritional value. none at all. it's like a human eating a big mac. it's junk food. and yes it tastes great, but it's really bad for you. if you feed your snake goldfish, it may develop vitamin deficiencies and wont develop well.

Hey! Im not clear yet

Should I try to feed my Motley Snow Corn with fish due to the fact she hasnt eat for around 2 weeks. I tried with pinkies but they die waiting for her.. LOL..

Thanks for your advise..
