Feeder Rats and Revolution de-louser

I've been treating my rat population with Baytril for URI flare and they're much improved. During the treatment, my vet noted "chewing" lice so I've treated the whole group last Tues 11.15 with Revolution. On Sunday 11.20, one female had a litter. Are these babies safe to feed my 3-yo corn snake?

No, I would not feed right away. I would read the Revolutuion box and find out how long the chemical stays active.

Thank you. That's a good suggestion. I'll see what I can find out about that Revolution. Better safe than sorry.

Revolution is pretty nasty, if you step back and think about it you are putting some chemical on the skin that nearly instantly kills anything sucking the blood of the animal. Since it is effective for around a month I would assume you need to wait at least a little longer than that, but I would call the company.

I have a related question - can one feed mice or rats being treated with ivermectin? It also can be effective at treating mites and lice, but takes longer.

I agree -- it is nasty stuff but does serve it's purpose.

My research per Wikipedia http://www.ask.com/wiki/Selamectin

Further research about insecticides controlling fleas that are Central nervous system modulators which is the primary product in Selamectin (Revolution) from
http://www.newmanveterinary.com/Fleas.html says "Revolution®, affects selected chloride ion movement across nerve and muscle cells of invertebrates, resulting in paralysis."

I had heard about using Ivemectin for rat lice also during my on-line research. I even have a tube. But when I took the ratties to the vet, he wanted to use Revolution, and we didn't know Freedah was pregnant. People call me awful for feeding my pet ratties' babies to my corn snake but the rats rarely get conjugal visits and I ended up with pet ratties because CC my corn snake didn't always eat them!

Ivermectin http://www.ask.com/wiki/Ivermectin is another nervous system and muscle function insecticide, so my cautious conclusion is neither Selamectin nor Ivermectin are safe for snakes. This weekend I will try to visit the local reptile specialists and listen to their experience and post here later.

thanks for the input and interest

Good research lhlh!

I always used Revolution on pet rats for mites. It works much faster, and is more commonly effective. Ivermectin isn't always effective. You can buy it online without needing to go to the vet too. It sounds like it may still be the best choice for feeder rats as you don't have to treat nearly as long so the rats should be safe to eat faster.

I personal wouldn't risk anything to my snakes by feeding any of these treated rodents to them. I would have culled off the whole group and started over imo. Not worth the risk at all....
