feeding for the first time

i am cutting the frozen pinkies in half, b/c my cornsnake is pretty small, should i put my snake in another container to feed him, or not? here is a pic, so if you could also give me some advice if i should cut the pinkie

I would just feed a really small pinky, but it wont hurt to feed a half. I would suggest feeding in a seperate container so he doesn't ingest any substrate in his viv.

You would be surprised how much a snake can eat.. i think a small pinky whole would be fine... oh and feed him in a seprate container
 
i am using newspaper at the moment, but i am thinking of getting another substrate, i was thinking aspen

Aspen works fine, Just do not use sand, cedar nor pine shavings. Cedar has volatile oils than will kill your snake.
