Feeding Guide

Can someone post a detailed "tutorial" on snake feeding? Something that would go into what to feed and how often to feed a snake at a particular age. For example,

<1 month 1 pinkie every 5 days
1-6 months 2 pinkies every 5 days
etc.....

Nobody really goes into this kind of detail, not at this forum, a website, or even The Cornsnale Manual. Or maybe the information is out there and I really suck at searching for things. But, it does not seem to be all in one place (or it is and really suck at searching) and I think it would be nice to have it all in one place for people to reference to (and maybe it will get stickied).

Nobody goes into that kind of detail because feeding quantity and frequency is really dependent on your snake's size, weight in particular. Age isn't really a factor.

That would be because the guide they go buy is to feed a prey 1.5 size the snake at the largest point.. and different snakes grow at different rates... My snake was about 12 inches when i bought him and i was feeding 1 pinky every 5 days.. well then i tried 2 pinkies and he scarfed em down, so now hes taking 2 pinkies every 5 days until i run out and then im gonna go up to fuzzies. He could probably eat the fuzzies now, but I already have about 8 more pinkies i want to use up and then ill buy the fuzzies...

Basically you just go by the size of the snake.. the prey should show a lump the day after feeding and when it doesn't show a lump.. you can move up. And you can guage by you snakes size, the size of teh lump, and how active they are after eating to if they are getting the right size.

The reason I ask is because my snake eats like a hellion. I moved her up to fuzzies and she still seems to be hungry. One time I fed her 2 fuzzies only a couple days apart. It seems a bit too soon to move up to anything higher than that because the fuzzies leave a lump and are about 1.5 times bigger than her body (although that is kind of hard to gauge). The snake is about 18" long and about 4-5 months old.

If a guide based on age is not appropriate, then maybe one can be written based on size.

there already is one based on size...no bigger than 1.5x the width of the thickest part of the body. Length has nothing to do with it. That's about as detailed as you're going to get because it's just what you said - a guide, there's nothing concrete because there are too many variables and it changes for every snake depending on the factors already mentioned.

Some snakes would eat every day if you let them, but it's not healthy to do so. One pinky every 5, then 2 (fed at the same feeding, not a day or two later), then a fuzzy every 7, then a hopper every 7 etc. When they are out the same day or the next day searching for food, I figure they are ready to move up. I find most move from pinkies to fuzzies rather rapidly. Usually I feed two of the same food item for several feedings before moving up in size.
