hey all, one of my hatchlings has just shed so i have put a pinkie in with him, he/she is showing no interest at the moment though. all the eggs from this clutch were smaller than average and as a result, the snakes are a bit smaller to. should i stil offer a full pinkie? or maybe cut the pinkie in half at first? would they still eat half a pinkie????

Do you have a pic of the snake and pinky? When I got my snake he was TINY and I fed him a half pink for the first few feeds.. then I bumped him up.

Some pinks are really big... you can do a search for the munson plan and use that as a guide. You just need a scale to weight the snake and pinks in grams
 
My hatchlings were between 7-8grams when they hatched and handled the extra small pinkies just fine. If you want you could start with just heads of the pinkies, that's what I did for my '09 males that were 7grams when I got them (6 months mind you after they had hatched) so they have been slow to grow but they have always eaten :D Now I'm just worrying about the 3 hatchlings I have that didn't eat their last meal I offered.
 
A pinky cut in half lengthwise (going with with spine rather than across it) has gotten several picky feeders/non-feeders to eat for me so far.
 
ok guys thanks for the advice, the pinkie is still in with him so i will see if he shows any interest and if not i will offer future meals 'cut in half'! sounds messy though....is there any standard way to cut a pinkie in half?? or is thee going to be blood and guts no matter what?
 
I tend to cut them in half while they are still frozen (much easier!) and then float the pinkies in a plastic bag in hot water. It's fairly mess, yes and you might want to sacrifice a spoon or pair or chopsticks or something to help you move the pink into the feeding bin.

i cut a pinkie in half down the middle today and shared it between 2 of my hatchlings that have had there first shed. neither have eaten so far but of the pinks has definately moved from were i left it so i guess maybe thats a sign of interest. il leave the pinks in overnight to see if anything happens, if not il take them out in the morn and then try again in a couple of days.
 
to get my small hatchling to eat I tried for like a month ,all kinds tricks, but the one that worked was just putting a pinkies head in a deli cup with the snake overnight , make sure theres air holes in the deli cup lol woke up, head was gone ... did it 2 more times then moved to a full tiny pink, after a few more feedings it started taking it from the tweezers like a normal feed
 
something else that i don't think was mentioned is not to try feeding too often or you might condition them to refuse. only try every 4-5 days. i also waited several days after shedding since my first clutch was big babies with big yolk bellies, and 9 of the 11 ate. do you know how much yours weigh?
 
ye i was worried about that, if nothing has happened by the morning i will remove the pinks and treat the rest of this clutch accordingly, offering another half pinky (or maybe pink head as suggested) in a few days. i was anticipating that it might be a while before getting the small ones to feed!
i havent weighed them but they are little worms! here is a linc to some pics of the first one out, the rest have all been about this size on average! the eggs from my other clutches are a lot bigger so i am expecting bigger hatchlings from those.....

yo guyd, so far only one snake out of the hatchlings that have shed has eaten, these snakes are all from the same clutch (the small ones). i have tried again tonight and will leave until morning, pinkie heads and half pinkies, see what happens!
