I am a proud new father to a 1-2 month old creamsicle, and as with all 1st time parents I have a lot of questions. Before anyone recommends it i have a copy of Kathy Love's book which is an excellent resource for new owners.
Two questions:
1) I have seen where it is suggested that owners shouldnt feed their snakes in their cages because they might swallow substrate and also associate the opening of the lid with the dinnerbell. If i remove him, how soon after feeding can i return him to the cage without CHARLIE barfing? A better question may be how do u experienced owners feed your young ones
2) I am using REPTI-BARK as my substrate inside of a fish tank (pic will follow), apart from removing any dropings is there anything else which should be done to the substrate and how often should i replace it

You will get many suggestions... so I will share what I do... :)

The snakes I have on aspen, I feed in a separate container (kritter keeper)- as soon as they finish (the lump has settled down, about 15 min) I gently let them slither back into their cages (front opening)- I have on occasion (very GENTLY) placed them in their cages (top opening)- I have had no problems .
With the snakes that have paper towel or news paper- I feed them in their cages.
As far as the substrate goes- spot clean as needed, change completely once a month (or sooner if there is a mess of some sort) sanitize/disinfect with the complete change

Hi there! Cute snake! You might want to give Charlie another hide, they like to have one on the warm side and one on the cool side so they can thermoregulate their temps and digest their food. The water bowl can go in the middle. And maybe something to climb on would be cool for Charlie as well. Congrats!
 
hi . If i were you i would get one of thoose critter keeper. that is what i feed mine in.If you gentile put him back in his enclosure he should be fine.clean the substate once a monthor sooner if it smells bad :puke01:

congrats, i have a creamsicle that is about the same size as yours. i feed both of my snakes in kritter keeper containers. i usually leave them be in a darkened room for at least twenty minutes and then check to see if they've eaten. if so, i carefully carry the keeper back to the enclosure and turn it on its side and place on the substrate, when the snake is ready he exits the keeper and finds a nice hiding place. i've only had one regurgitation, thank god and it was simply because i handled my snow too soon after he ate and caused him stress :( regurgitation is common and could result for many reasons, but it is unlikely that your little guy will regurgitate after or during the short trip from one tank to another.

i tidy up the enclosures weekly of waste and do a complete cleaning every month or so. i would also suggest adding another hide to your enclosure as well as a climbing vine or leaves so your snake can explore and get lots of neat exercise. congrats again and best of luck with your new snake!!!

thanks for all the advice, I will try using a critter keeper for feeding. It's been only 3 days since i got charlie and i wont try feeding until sunday. As for the cage the pic above was from the 1st night, I have attached a pic of his current setup I added a heat lamp for some additional heating during the day. I also intend on replacing the current hide when charlie has become climatised to his new surroundings. Ideally the new hide i want would be a long cylindrical tube spanning the entire length of the tank.

feeding

Following the advice above i went to walmart and bought a sterilite shoe box container to feed charlie in. I then placed a hide in the box along with a pinkie. I then carried charlie over and he wasted no time. I thought i would have to give him some privacy, but i guess he has a strong feeding response because he just grabbed that pinkie and swallowed he didnt even kill it. I am about to return charlie to his cage now it's been 45 mins since he ate.
