Feeding Problem

RutherML

New And Addicted Already!
I just bought my new CS (i am also a new owner of a snake as well) and it was feeding day (and they had yet to feed the CS) on sunday and i tried to feed it when i got it home but it turned down the frozen pinkie that i had purchased from the store. I tried again late last night at around 11:30pm and it still turned down the food. Is this due to the stress that it has on it from moving. Possibly not comfortable enough with its surroundings yet. Also the pinkie that i have just look to large for it. How large can they eat? I will try to get a picture of it tonight and post it up as well as the tank that its in. Also i do not feed it in its viv i place it in a different box to feed.

Your snake needs to adjust to his new surroundings so that he will feel safe enough to eat, which makes them vulnerable. You should leave him alone for about 4 days in his new enclosure. Don't mess with him at all and then after that time try to feed. Handle him very little for the first few weeks till you get him feeding well, then start short handling periods to let him get to know you. And yes, make sure you feed him in a seperate container so he does not eat substrate by mistake as he swallows his mouse. These guidelines are good for any time you bring in a new snake to your home regardless of his size/age.

The snake can eat a mouse about 1 1/2 times the widest girth of his belly.

best wishes

Thank you for the reply and information DawnRenee2000. I figured as much that it will be stressed but wanted to make sure about it. If you come back to this thread later today i most likely will have a pick of the snake and the tank that it is in if you want to see it

I have the temp of the light running range of 80-90 degrees and the hummidity stays at range of 50-55. Is this a good temp and hummidity level for the cornsnake?

Also i hear that if you have a heat pad that it is likely for the snake to hurt itself by sitting to long on the heat pad. Is this true? What type of heat source do you use on your snake?

Also what type of substrate do you use. I bought the ReptiBark for my tank and the snake seems to not mind it at all. Burys itself a lot and hard to see it while it is buried.

I use an Under Tank Heater for all my snakes. I find they are much easier to regulate, much more efficient to run, plus they get the heat down on the bottom of the tank where the snake needs it.

Yes, a snake can burn itself on an unregulated heating pad. Most of us use a thermostat or rheostat to control the heat output, plus a digital thermometer with a probe to accurately measure temps.

I think your temps are a little high. They should be 70-75 on the cool side and 80-85 on the warm side. Your humidity is in a good range.

Most of us use aspen for substrate. Repti bark is ok, it is just not the preferred substrate, and sometimes it has been known to have bugs in it. They are not harmful to your snake, but you still don't want a house full of bugs.

Good luck with your snake, and I can't wait for the pictures.

The heat temp gauge is on the heated side where the lamp is. I will have to move the temp gauge to the other side to see how much cooler it is over there. I will try to feed the snake later at the end of this week.

Also here are the pics of the snake and the viv its in.

Lovely snake, and nice set-up, but those stick on thermometers are not really accurate enough, a digital one would be much better

So what type of Corn Snake is it? I don't know, i looked at some pics on a website and if you ask me it looks to be a reverse okeetee. But this is my first corn snake and i am doing lots a research on them to begin with and what type it was, was not the biggest issue for me.

Looks like the saddle borders are too thin to be a reverse okeetee, but to me that looks a nice bright amel that will only get better with time

I am going to try to feed again this weekend most likely on friday night. I will post again and let yall now how it goes.

well i bought a live pinkie this time but the snake would still not even act interested in eating. i left the snake with the pinkie for almost 3 hours and it did not eat. anymore advice people? and thanks in advance as well.

Don't Panic, Snakes just need to get use to its New home, Snakes are VERY picky eaters and can live without food for months, I'm guessing it needs to get use to you

well i went home today for lunch and got the snake out to hold for about 10 minutes i noticed and little mite running across one of my fingers. so i am going to go to the store buy some mite treatment and treat for these things. could having mites cause the snake to lose its apatite? i will have to tell the pet store or call them and tell them the snake has mites and they should take a look at the others to make sure they don't sell anymore to anyone else with mites. well i post and let yall know if you like.

Mites can put a snake off it's feed and I'd definitely get that treated right away.

Then I would suggest that you do a search on the forum for feeding as there are tons of different threads on what to try to do if you have one that's a shy or picky eater. Just requires some reading on your part :)

As soon as i get off work here i will be headed to the store to buy some mite treatment and take them out of the terrarium that they are in and treat them both. I will remove all the substrate and clean the terraium with the mite treatment and then clean it again with a 1:30 bleach dilute. I will then clean all the hides and vines as well with the bleach dilute and place paper towels down for substrate so that i can monitor the mites afterwards. thanks for the advice i have been reading some threads just not a whole lot of them.

well yall i went to the petstore where i got this snake from and tolled them about the problem because when i got home it was not acting right. snake was running its head into everything. well i tolled the manager of the store and he tried to force feed the snake but got nothing from it. he asked if they could take the snake for observation and we should pick out another snake because he thought that is should be adopted out due to the problem it is having. My g/f decided that it was a good idea because this one is her snake.
Well we brought home the new snake and cleaned out the terrarium and used a mite killer on the snakes and on the hide and vine thats in it. anyways we still had that one left over live pinkie and we placed it in the box with the new snake. came back in about 10 minutes and that snake had already ate the pinkie. it was already half way through its belly. we are upset about the other snake and its problems it was having. i hope that the snake turns out ok. well thanks for all the advice that was given on this thread.
