feeding question

A lot of people have had problems with their parents regarding keeping mice. Alive of frozen. Why has this advice never been given?

What hamsters are we taking about? Normal hamsters or dwarf hamsters? I have 2 as pets but no way i'm going to feed those :D

It's more difficult to breed dwarf hamsters though. They should be seperated and only be together in mating time. otherwise they try and kill each other. Also, the male may very well eat the young. Seems much more complicated then just putting a male and female mouse together and see what comes of it.
And they indeed have a nasty bite :D Don't know how it goes with regular hamsters though. At least they don't smell so bad.

Gisele i've hear some good things about flower. Just put it where appropriate and see the next morning if there are any marks. At least that confirms he's at least still close by :)

I would hate to lose a snake. Not just because of the snake, but because of the neighbours. I have an appartment on the 9th floor. I hate to have then turn up by a neighbour. I'm scared to death i'll be forbidden to have them. Even though there's no law against it or against appartment rules. People here really overreact on snakes :/
 
Jicin, you will have the same problem with Mice. A Male mouse is just as apted to eat the offspring as a hampster is. It is speculated that it has something to do with the mouse thought/idea that if there aren't any pinkies hanging on a female, then the male mouse can get it more.
 
I never have probelms with any of my male mice. I keep colonies of 1.2 up to 1.4 and never remove anyone when pregnant or babies are present!

huh...maybe I just need a new male mouse. I have had the problem a couple of times now. only loose 1 or 2 of the babies, but that is 2 to many. I currently have one colony of 1.3. looking at starting another of about the same size in the next couple of weeks. Always seems that the pet stores are out of mices when i need them. :shrugs: you would think that they would keep some back for me.
 
Jicin kinda reminds me of another person I read about on a thread. A member on the had to move to california becuase her husband died in Iraq and was wondering how to move her corn out to cal from north carilina. And anothrer person just typed the rudest coment ever and was threatening to report the post to Ritch. Well everyone else following that thread royaly told him off and thats the last I saw him post anything rude.Lol we had a decent luagh over that and for soem reason jicin reminds me of the same shmo.

Oh and i think starting a rat colony is a good idea!

I don't have problems with my male mice. I have 2 set ups 1.3 and 1.2. I have to give it to my mice they are very good parents of all the litters.

If you think its your male then change him out. When males kill babies it usually means he feels that they are not his young. If he is seperated from one of the females even for a short time that can encourage him to kill the babies.

Hopefully you get a nicer male for your future project.
 
I haven't had the male seperated from the female. I usually use all the pinks because I have 6 hatchlings right now. I take them and freeze them for later. however, when I sell off my hatchlings, I am going to be letting the babes grow up so that I can start to feed to my yearlings and adults. so I don't want this to happen. I will start my second colony before I decide to get rid of my current male as he is the only one in my current colony that will come up to my hand when I am cleaning or feeding.
 
What ever you decided to do I wish ya luck. I enjoy breeding the mice, and you seem to as well. I also have a favorite in my group. :) And your male seems really cool.
