Feeding ?'s

LindsayMarie

Been here awhile
First where is a good place to order pinkies, mice etc? I used rodentpro a long time ago for my bearded dragons, but that was a few years ago. Also I noticed it looks like alot of people remove the snake from its enclosure to feed it. Putting it into a smaller container. Is this to prevent it from thinking your hand is food when you go to pick it up?

One of the corns that is an option is 3 weeks or so and hasnt ate yet. What is the usual order of trying to feed non feeders. The options to get them to eat. What order do they usually follow?

Thanks for the help! Lindsay

There are several on-line places to buy mice, rodent pro is one of them. The purpose behind removing the snake to a seperate container to feed is so that 1: They don't equate the cage opening to food coming and bite you. 2: So they don't swallow substrate and result in a deadly impaction. 3: every time they get in the feeding container they will recognize it and it makes feeding easier. 4: It makes it easier to watch them eat.
As for the non feeder... You're best off avoiding it. but if you insist on taking it, then using the search function will be your best bet for getting ideas on what to try. There are a myriad of things from braining to scenting to different types of animals, to live pinkies to force feeding.

Anyone else? I would like to get some feedback on who is the most popular online place to buy the feeders! I tried to do a search but didnt come up with much. :shrugs: Any advice and/or experience you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lindsay

Do a search for Big Cheese rodents on this forum. Lot's of people rave about their product.

I've stopped buying from Rodent Pro because their mice are always scrawny. I haven't ordered anywhere else. I've been paying mega $$ for frozen mice at Petco, but at least they're nice an plump.

I have used RodentPro, Mouse Factory, and Big Cheese. Of the three, I prefer Big Cheese, because they have good prices and excellent quality. Rodent Pro is the cheapest, but you know the old saying "you get what you pay for." It definitely applies there.

I have also heard good things about Cajun Mice, though I have not used them personally.

Sorry to butt in, but I have a quick question...

I understand the need to feed the snake in a separate container.

However, since it is recommended to not touch the snake after it has eaten (so they don't regurge), how do you get them back into their regular enclosure?

Do you just gently dump them back in to avoid touching them? :)

You can touch them as far as putting them back in their home. If the seperate feeding container is small enough, you can place it inside the tank so they can crawl out themselves.

Just don't handle (play with, exercise) them. It's the excessive movement that may cause the regurge. :puke01:

Aww that smiley is gross...

How long after feeding is it ok to handle your corn? how quickly after feeding is too soon?

Just trying to get a feel for when is ok.. :/

For putting it back, as soon as the lump has made it to the stomach you can pick them up gently and put them back in their viv. As for having them out again after that, it's generally advised to wait 48 hours before handling.

I just fed one of my babies and tried feeding the other both in their cages. One was successful, the female ate from tongs almost right away. The male just slithers away, completely carefree about whats going on. So I put him into a tupperware container that is placed in his cage. I put the pinky in the tupperware with him, covered it up for him to have privacy and so far no luck. But my point is I fed both in their cages. Is this bad???? Thanks, Lindsay

I tried to just poke my baby corn back into its container just after it had eaten and it bit me. So I guess I wont be doing that again
