Ok. I got my new corn on wednesday. May 2, 2007. The petshop said s/he is a few months old. Not sure excatly. He is approx 17 inches long.

1) So is s/he appox 3 - 5 months of age.

2) If I decide to give him a bath 3 days after eating, will he become use to this and only do his poo in a bath? I dont' wnat him to only do his poo in the bath cause their may be times when I wont' have time to put him in. But for clean up, its a gd way so I have read.

3) For the water bowl, is 3/4 full to much/to little.

4) For his first feeding <a week from purchase date>, should I leave him in his tank and put the pinky on a paper towl or something? I am gonna start using a diff container for feedings but dont' wanna stress him out for his first feeding.

Just a lil update on my corn.

He<sex unknown but gonna say male> is doing great. He spends 99% of his time in his branches. He likes to tease the cat i think. lol The cat will sit on the floor for hrs and just watch him. He comes out from time to time to have a look around. I am gonna try the t-shirt method. Gonna put a shirt in the tank tonite. Will thts all the update for now. lol He dont' do much else yet.
 
1) I'd say it's a little older than 3-5 months of age. 17 inches is pretty long for a snake that young. It is possible but unlikely that a pet shop snake would grow that quickly. My yearlings are just over 18 inches.

2) Snakes don't really need scheduled "baths". Leave a water bowl in the viv at all times. When the snake wants to get wet, it will take a dip in the bowl. The snake will also drink from this bowl, so keep it clean and keep it filled at all times. My corns poop in random places, usually along the edges of the viv. Obviously if the snake poops in the water, you need to change it right away.

3) My bowls are 4-5 inches in diameter and hold about an inch of water. Wide, shallow dishes are better than deep bowls. It's deep enough to get the snake wet when it pleases, but not deep enough that the snake has to swim. :)

4) You can take him out of his tank for his first feeding. If you still have the original container you bought him in, put him in that. If not, then just use whatever container you will continue to use for feedings. He'll be fine. You can also put a small handful of his substrate into the feeding container so it smells familiar.

A large purpose of a feeding container is to get them away from the possible ingestion of substrate, so I have to politely disagree with the above statement. Feeding containers should not have any substrate in them.

I made a mistake. I said he was approx 17 inches. but he is more like 14 inches. so is that in the 3 - 5 month range. He wasn't raised in a pet shop. The pet shop tht i bought him from had him sent in froma a breeder. The only had him in the shop for less then 2 weeks. I know that for sure because i went to the pet shop and ordered him.

First of all a big welcome and congratz on your new snake. His home sounds very large and posh :grin01:

Regarding the size/age of your snake. Their size is more closely related to their feeding schedule as opposed to their age. A 1 year old snake could be 30 grams 15 inches long if it was fed on a maintenance diet. You could find another snake to grow to this size in a mater of a few of months if it was fed more frequently. I see you've been measuring your snake by its length, this si a very inaccurate method. To be honest the ebst method of measurement would be to weigh the little guy if you can get hold of a set of scales.

Cool tks for the tip Jimmus. I will see if i can get some scales. I have a pic of my set up in this form in the husbandry and basic care section. I also attaced a pic of my new baby. its blurry but its there. lol

You can pick up a nice digital scale, accurate to within one gram, for less that $30, including s/h, from eBay. I use two different scales: one accurate to within 1g for all snakes under 300g, a different one, accurate only to within 5g but capable of weighing up to 20 pounds, for the larger snakes. While being off by even a few grams might be a symptom of illness or failure to thrive in a snake that only weighs 20g to begin with, being off by that much on a snake weighing 600g may just mean he needs a drink of water. :)
