:)I FINALLY got my corn about an hour ago I have put him into his viv and he has been having a sniff around he is a Crimson Corn, 7 months old I am going to fed him tommorow. me and my sister have had him out just then and she moved to fast and he gave her a little nip she was hysterical crying thinking she was going to die because they are poisinous :laugh01: I'll post some pics soon maybe tonight or tommorow. I'm thiknking of calling him Corinthian. suggestions welcome
 
Congrats! :dancer: on your new snake. You should give him an extra day or two to get used to his new viv before feeding him. I can't wait to see pics of him. Good luck.
 
I've been up to check how he is going on and the glass doors are very steamy I have chosen to leave the lamp off untill I get a cage to go around it, but how can I stop this steaming, the snake keeps burrowing under the wood chip bark is the normal I keep gettin worried he has escaped but after sifting through it for a while I find him.

Snakes love to burrow, so don't sweat that.

Do you have a digital thermoter? Without one (or two) of those, you really can't have a handle on what's really going on in there. It'll help you set the right temperatures for the warm and cold side, and just give you more control over things.

I have a thermometer with needle on it I just want to stop the steamingi have the heat mat nderneath should I move it to the back to the side to stop it
 
Is the water bowl on the hotter side of the viv? That could be causing the steaming. If you've only just set the viv up I'd wait to check the temperatures are stable before feeding the snake, if you've got a digital thermometer that records the minimum and maximum temperatures then you'll know how your temps are doing.
 
Ive got the water bowl right in the corner but the heat mat is quite big and take up 3/4 of the tank. quite worried now
 
Maplins do a good digital thermometer/hygrometer with probe for under £20. The dial ones aren't accurate enough really
 
hmm...heat mat covering 3/4 of the tank is too much...you might want to go and get a smaller UTH...it should cover about 1/3 of the tank. That might help with the steaming ;)

oh, and I am ditto on holding off the first feed...he needs a few days to settle in with no disturbances before you feed him. Its so exciting to do the first feed, but you don't want a first regurge either..lol
 
I personally wouldn't handle him until he get used to the new viv etc , it stressfull enought being moved in to new surroundings,
 
The dial/needle thermometers are notoriously innaccurate, what readings are you getting? and what sort of thermostat is controlling the heatmat?
 
Haven't got a thermostat controlling the heat mat I have just been up and its reading 70 so i turned the light off and it went up to 80 I decided not to leave the light on so I have taken some substrate out. Are they nocturnal and shall I leave the heat mat on 24/7
 
That dial thermemeter will not measure how hot the heatmat is, it'll just read the air temp. It's the heatmat itself that can burn your snake if it's unregulated
 
You should consider getting a thermostat for the heat mat. Many heat mats can get as hot as 100+ and can be dangerous for the snake.

Yes, cornsnakes are nocturnal. Leave the substrate in. Also, do you have plenty of hides for your new snake?
