I'm starting a feeder colony and would really like some pretty breeders, since I know I'll get attach to the girls that stick around... However, I can't find any mouse breeders around here (Boise, ID)...

I'd kinda like to find mice from someone who's OK with me breeding them to feed (I know many breeders aren't). So, does anyone nearby breed for some color/markings? I'm not terribly picky, just anything but white!
 
Petco usually has various color mice. Just make sure they are healthy.

Or find a local feeder breeder or reptile show.
 
I've been to 2 different PetCos, 3 private local stores, and PetSMART doesn't even carry mice (what the hell?). I'm really desperate, I even tried to have one local store order them and later learned their suppliers' only breeder white mice.

As for reptile shows, this darned city doesn't have any that I've found. I sometimes feel like the ONLY reptile enthusiast for several miles.

That's odd, The local PetsMart here has mice, but only one sex. I have to travel about a mile to the next one which carries the opposite sex. :shrugs:

I don't think I found that one, do they have a the website? I found the RMCA and MidWest Mouse Clubs and quite a few private sites so far.
 
that is not the name. i think RMCA ist the one I'm talking about . join the club and dont tell the memberes that you keep snakes or that you are raising them for pet shops or food items . Tell them you just want to breed for looks and health. LIE THOUGH YOUR TEETH
 
I know a breeder who ships (though shipping is expensive -the only legal way to ship is through the airlines.) It can run over $150 for shipping (about $120 for the airline. Heck, just the carrier to ship is around $30.) If you are serious about getting fancy mice, shipping would be a viable option. She has many colors and coat types and she won't give you a hard time as a feeder breeder. If you would like her contact info, send me a private message. She is located in Georgia.

No kidding. I've been a member of their forum for quite a while, and even if you want to breed your own feeders so that YOU know they've been fed well and treated humanely, they don't want to know. "Feeder" is displayed as though there were some completely different letters between the F and the R.

I wouldn't personally join the RMCA to pick up breeder mice, to be honest - the overwhelming vibe I get from them is that they DON'T think people should be breeding litters at all, that that should be left to "the experts".

Finding a feeder-friendly breeder is really your best bet. That way you don't get asked for updates on the babies that you can't provide :)
 
I posted in a few forums for information on breeders around me, no response yet. There is a feeder friendly breeder about 8 hours drive from me... My husband's parents are halfway, so if there are no bites I *think* we might look into visiting them sometime in the future.

Thanks for the offer chausies, but the hubby isn't willing to spend that much to have them shipped... :(

All large petstores in my area do this to. (Petsmart, Pet Supermarket, Petco) It is to discourage unplanned litters in the store and to an extent, out of the store as well. Your lucky it was just a mile.

Don't even MENTION breeding. These people are fanatically opposed to breeding unless you go through a mentor and all kinds of other crap. You'll probably also have to sign a contract saying you will never breed them and if you do, the breeder has the right to confiscate the litter and all the mice they sold you.

I looked into getting rats from a pet rat breeder and was amazed at all the bs they make you go through.

If you do go this route, you'll probably have to get just one sex as they won't adopt out mixed sex groups. Just use male albino mice and get a group of "fancy" females. All the offspring will be het albino, but you'll get your colors.

It would really be much easier to just find a feeder breeder within driving distance.

Did you ask somebody at the Petco or PetSmart? They should be able to order you some colored mice. My local Petco sometimes has all white and then I'll look another time and they have all kinds of colors and markings.

Petsmart should have mice as well, just one sex and they charge $5 per mouse. I guess they are trying to discourage people from buying them for feeders.

When I was breeding mice last year I had all kinds of colors and coat types (rex, long hair, etc). It just became a big problem because I would end up keeping so many and had way too many colonies going. Once my ASF rats started producing well I got rid of all the mice. I just started up again with albinos for my new 07 hatchlings coming soon. I'm trying to resist the temptation to get colored and rex mice , or I'll end up in the same boat again =)
 
Its too bad you dont live closer.... I have many fancy colored mice and rats.. and since food is what I breed them for, I dont have a problem with with :D

Pfft where I work we have two seperate enclosures. One for males and one for females. We only get in white mice though. The only colored ones we've gotten in have been for adoption and obviously we don't offer up people's pets for food.

I didn't think to ask them, that might explain why the PetSMART had no mice or rats actually, gotta ask for them.

As for culling, the hubby is not so easily attached and will be doing all the food prep, so hopefully that'll cut down on cute babies saved... I also don't mind hooking up a giant tank for cute female babies for when that doesn't work!

Actually have you thought about going to a local petshop that you might have a good relationship with? One of the shops i frequent has a contact who deals with rodents. I got a few Siberian Hamsters and Gerbils from him for breeding (dirt cheap $11 for 7 animals) and thought what the hey. The rodent lady who brings in mice is there. I asked her if she could get some other types of mice for the store so I could pick up. She would try her best. I was asking about Spiny Mice and Deer Mice. I found out that Deer mice are illegal to buy and sell in Minnesota. But she would look into the Spiny Mice. So it never hurts to ask.

Hamsters, a good idea I had three a few years ago. I got them the end of July the following spring I had over a hundred. The only thing is they are nippy, of course last night one of my male mice nailed me when I was feeding. susan
