First Corn From a Pet Store Story

Well, if they only bought say 2 or 3 at a time....where would they find more after a while? It wouldn't have done me any good either, I would have had to go to numerous places to sell what I had as I was leaving the state. I suppose if you had a place that you did business with you could work out a deal to sell them so many at a time, but most breeders won't sell wholesale that way. They are still having to feed and care for those snakes until they are taken by the store. I'm not sure what the compromise would be. I'd prefer not to sell to the store at all as it's not the best for my babies, BUT sometimes that's where you are, and I think I went with the best place. People who knew me, knew my snakes were healthy, had full history of the snakes and a place I knew would take reasonable care and attempt to seperate them wherever possible.

Both of my snakes I bought from our local petshop. The one I have was I guess a subadult when I got her for my daughters for christmas 4 yrs ago, She(or he) was housed with a NASTY TEMPERED rat snake. But all the babies,(one of which we got about 2 months ago) are all in individual deli cups. I've not had any problems with either one healthwise. Other then Tiaga being a bit underfed now, which has been totally my fault and I am rectifying and she's doing much better. The petshop I have gotten them from isn't a "superstore" type shop but a small store.

I think you have to make the distinction between a pet store and a reptile pet store. I've purchased snakes from reptile shops, and a couple from pet stores. The problem with pet stores is that they cater to the pet trade so they don't care about the gender or hets. Pet stores also mislabel a lot of the animals as well...

I just got a corn snake from Petco, I was really nervous about it since I've heard so many bad things about Petco but my local pet store was WAY too expensive ($59). They had the baby corns in a small plastic cage that was inside a larger viv with hermit crabs in it!? It was really strange. They had no heat gradient whatsoever. And the people there couldn't give me any info on age or morph, and the only thing they asked was if I was 18 :p. But so far he is doing well, he just had his first pinky in his new home and he ate it without any problems. Hopefully this trend continues.

Well time for another update. My little guy from the pet store is doing very well. He has been eating like a pig, and has shed for the first time. He is a very nice red and orange right after shed. I'm interested to see how he looks after a couple more. The rest of my collection is also doing very well, hopefully this continues. Thanks for all the replies it was interesting to see how this thread evolved.
