first corn snake

I'm getting my first corn ksnake on july 9th at the white plains, new york reptile expo. I have researched corns for about 3 months, i know all the basics. I am planning on heating the tank with an Zoo Med Repti-Therm UTH. I am going to put it underneath the tank with a substrate of newspaper. does anyone have any experience with them and no approx. how hot they can make a tank if the air temp is about 71 degrees?

anyother info. would be nice

With just newspapaer as you substrate...the floor of the viv is going to get to hot with that UTH; unless it is regulated by a thermostat. I learned this lesson the hard way, and killed my first cornsnake because it was too hot. I had the same exact UTH also. My advice would be to get a thermostat, that way you can keep the substrate temp at around 83 F, and not have to worry about it being to cold or to hot.

You do need some sort of heat regulating device. Either a thermostat or rheostat. I use plug-in lamp dimmers that I got at Wal-mart. But my house temps don't vary that much. If yours do, a thermostat would be better.

I know it's personal preference, but I don't like Zoo Med UTHs. I prefer Exo-Terra. They seem to be more consistent than Zoo Med.

I use the Zoo Med UTH's and without some type of regulation they get to well over 100 degrees. The Zoo Med Thermostats with probe work well enough, and can be had for as low as $23 online. You'll also need a digital thermometer with a probe, these can be bought at WalMart for as low as $8.

Zoo Med Save Your Reptiles ReptiTemp 500R Remote Sensor Thermostat
... would that be a good idea how does it work?

sorry if i ask to many questions but i want the best for my new corn

i think im going to switch to the Exo-Terra Heat Wave Terrarium heater... considering what you guys have said about the other one...

You must get a thermostat. If you dont, this is what can happen
Good Lord Alcatraz!
I don't think I've ever seen a burn that bad on a snake! The poor thing!
Your heart must have been broken when you saw it. I know mine would have been. My sympathies and condolences if it didn't survive.

The snake pictured wasnt mine, just a photo I found on another forum, but it does show the damage UTH can do.
