First Feed!

SnekMommas

Gabi & Meli
Hi everybody!

Soooo we have some news!!!:laugh::laugh:

Tambi just had his first feed with us and it was a success! We were both so worried he'd refuse to eat, but after a bit of time, persistence, and zombie mouse dancing, we got the job done. :dancer:

We kept him in his little feeding tupperware (and took the opportunity to add in his new second hide and install his heat mat) and left him 20 minutes after he swallowed before carefully lowering the tupperware into his vivarium and letting him slither back home.

So far things look good, and he actually seems less shy (he's been watching us from inside his new hide instead of burrowing under the substrate) now that we've fed him. Perhaps feeding him proved we mean no harm? :shrugs:

Anyway, we will keep an eye on him for the next 48 hours, make sure there's no regurge and all that, but we're optimistic!

Thanks again for all the help, and we've attached some pictures!

Much love,
Gabi, Meli, and Tambi ♥

Congrats ! :)

I believe he is also in "blue" looking at the eyes and body. Amel's are one of the harder ones to notice. So the good news is it is the beginning of the shed cycle so by the time he does shed his skin he will have digested the pinkie.
No worries but in the future it is advisable just to skip the feeding when they go into blue. Depending on the timing it can cause regurgitation. If a snake swallows a prey right before the shed then they can't contract and expand their body to break lose the old skin from the new where the food is in their belly. They will regurgitate in order to do so.
Again, no worries and congrats! :)

Thank you for the feedback! We had noticed when we were looking through the pictures that his color seemed a bit dull and his eyes looked cloudy, so we figured he might be starting a shed.
Next time, we will definitely pay more attention to these signs! :)

Fingers crossed no regurge happens because of the closeness of the feed to his shed. As far as the shed goes, any advice? A pet store associated suggested we wipe him down every week or so with a damp towel... :shrugs:

Thanks, Meli and Gabi

I wouldn't worry about anything at all , you're doing just fine ! As regards the shedding process - I simply read up on it online . Basically once he's back to normal looking ( colour-wise and clear eyes ) he hasn't shed but will do in the coming days so just first his viv / rub a couple of times each day AFTER you notice he's looking normal until you see / find his shedded skin .

Some snakes hide away throughout the whole process yet some ( including yours ) will still eat - if anything its a sign of a healthy appetite which is a positive .

Not able to edit for some reason ..
If should have said SPRAY his viv / rub a couple of times daily after his eyes clear and he's got his colour back .

One other thing is there's really no need to feed in as separate tub just put his food in his viv BUT on a piece of cardboard then you don't have to move him at meal times .

Some day we got to start a thread entitled "Funny pet store advise" lol :face_palm_02:

Unless your house has an unusually low humidity level there is nothing you have to do. If you think you need to add moisture then you can spray but keep it to a minimum as it will promote bacterial growth. You can also add a moist hide. Moist hides are petri dishes for bacteria but at least they can be removed after the shed occurs.

Seriously ??
We have to pay 25 dollars to edit posts ?!?!

Well, it's $25 to support the forum. The ability to edit is just a perk of that. I make enough typos it's worth the $0.48 per week to me. :dunce:

I'm with Dragonling. It is great so support the forum and being able to edit is a nice perk.

Your little one's feeding pics are adorable. Congrats!
