First Heart Skipper

kdickens

I Yam What I Yam
Have you ever looked in your viv and felt your heart skip a beat? I had the day before put in a new Repti Shelter (humid hide) with damp moss inside. Later I went to see if Loopy had discovered it yet (I knew he hadn't, it was too soon and he's not that adventurous) and noticed the top of the viv wasn't how I normally leave it. The lid was on ... but not secured! So I remove the top and pic up the warm hide, where he always is, and he's not there! Okay Ken .... just relax ... I start sifting through the substrate cause he likes to tunnel a bit. No snake. Okay Ken ... I said relax! I take the top off the new hide knowing he wouldn't be there ... I was right ... no snake. Okay Ken, now you can start to worry! Look around the viv once more (it's only a 10 gal. tank, how far could he be?) Look around on the floor .... no ... that couldn't happen could it? Look inside again .... the new hide. I move the damp moss around a bit .... that little scamp was in there, all covered up!

I feel your fear. The little worms are great at hiding, or fitting themselves into the tiniest of spaces. I'm so glad you found him. I guess he loves his new humid hide!

Very suspenseful! :eek1:

Have you ever considered writing adventure yarns? :grabbit:

I'm really glad your little sneaky one is safe & sound! But maybe we can ALL use a reality-check from time-to-time to keep us on our toes! No matter HOW thoroughly we ensure that the enclosures that keep our sneaky ones safe from harm are secure, it only takes ONE slip for them to be outta there! It's almost like nature is DARING us to make that ONE little mistake! Which is why I NEVER change my snakes' water or do ANYTHING else with them, for that matter, when I'm on the phone or otherwise pre-occupied! My largest viv is a 65-gallon-sized nylon, screen-mesh enclosure which has a front-opening zipper as a way to gain access. It's also about 7 years old. Did ya ever have a zipper that's kinda worn out and slips off of its tracks and just pops open? Being on the phone (hands-free ear-piece, of course) sometimes assists in the drudgery of completing mundane tasks and recently, a friend of mine wondered if I had dropped the phone or got disconnected when I stopped conversing. If he only coulda seen the look on my face when I discovered Lilly on TOP of the viv, just curled-up and flicking her tongue at me as if to say, "See what I can do IDIOT? BET YA WON'T LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN, HUH?"

Needless to say, I took Lilly's imagined message to heart. I will NEVER again change her water while being preoccupied again! (My wife has always stated that I wasn't the best at poly-phasic activity and till I tried to fart & sneeze at the same time - Guys, it CANNOT be done and if you TRY, you will wind up cleaning up a larger portion of your house that day! - I didn't believe in her innate wisdom in reference to the shortcomings of the human male!).

Ahhh . . . the THINGS we mull over with our first cup of coffee on a Saturday morning!

I have definitely had several moments like these. I've literally removed everything from the cage and went through the substrate 3 times and been CONVINCED I'd lost my snake. It always amazes me how well they hide themselves.

Been there. I can feel it as I read your story. Mine was a badly designed latch and didn't have a happy outcome. I'd be nearly as devastated if Loopy had really gone missing.

I AM SO RELIEVED!

Love these little scamps of ours. Now I gotta go make sure my 3 are where I think they are, lol.

P.S. Reporting three snakeys in three secured vivs (sigh of relief)

Thanks everyone for your comments! I know I need to be more vigilant in my snake keeping security! It's easy to miss something. Glad Loopy was where he was supposed to be that's for sure!
