woke up today to find one off my Mice have give me a very nice litter off about 6-9 pinkes dont want to disterb them that much just incase the mother eats them , btw how long do i have to wait till i can sex / clean out the tank beacuse like most luck thay where born today when thay where going to be cleaned out

Well Yopu can sex them roughly if you can certainly tell them apart at roughly 5 days (or at least i can next to my b/f who can't :grin01: ) and as for cleaning out the cage. you can deffinatly do that after 3 days

after 3 days is best. And please Conscript. Ask your own questions in your own thread please.

Everyone seems paranoid of cannabalism on this forum. Don't be, it hardly ever happens. I used to breed mice on a large scale for the pet industry, it does not happen as often as it seems to be made out to be.

No it can and might happen. But like you stated. you worked for the large scale pet industry. There for you obviously had better access to food with higher protien then some of us other breeders .

No, I said I bred for the pet industry. So no, I didnt have better food or cages or whatever. I just bred mice for pets thats all. I just had lots, hahahaha. But as long as you dont poke around the first couple days, its not really a problem.

You don't have to poke around the nest for a mouse to eat her babies. Sometimes she'll do it because she feels there is something wrong with them, or because their not getting enough pretoien in their diet. Conscript don't worry, if she hasn't already done so, don't worry. just watch them carefully.

If something's wrong with them its best if she kills them anyways. Nature is weeding out the weakest ones. Good luck with your babies!

well in all fairness natural selection is anything but playing a part in a breeding colony, we choose who to mate with what females, and any runts just go to the chopping block same as any others.

The pups that i have are less than a week old, it takes 5 weeks to get to sexual maturity?

no Conscript. It takes 6 weeks for females to reach sexual maturity and males 8 weeks. At 5 days you can roughly sex the babies, if you know what your looking for.

They can breed as young as 4 weeks... not a good thing though, especially for the does. They are not old enough to take the physical strain, nor the mental strain of raising babies. When cannabalism does happen, this is often the reason; young mothers.

just a note...

Yes, it's a good idea NOT to disturb a female with newly born young. But...I have it happen all the time with my large colony. That on cleaning day, there is bound to be a female having babies! Just last week while cleaning I found a box with some newborns, and one still in the sac! The momma was moved to a holding container on her own till I got the cage cleaned. Finished the cage within moments, as they are just kitty litter trays, dump, and refill with shavings. Put adult mice and babies back in, and then added Momma who was still obviously in labor. And they did just fine. No cannibalism. The baby in the sac was fed to my musk turtles. With as big a group as I have though, I don't fret much about cannibalism. But every now and then you get a group of mice that seem to do it a lot. That group simply gets fed off and hope non of the babies they had ever produced had ever gone on to be breeders. I've had babies cannibalized once and then the group never does it again. yet as stated, some groups get into the habit of doing so! But in my colony it is overall pretty rare. Good luck!
