First Shed!

Majik had her first shed night before last! Yay! She ate while she was in the blue too! I was looking at her eyes the day before I was going to feed her, and I was thinking, "Is she gonna shed soon?....Should I feed her?...Will she take it?..." And I ended up doing it anyways, because I didn't want her to feel like she didn't have food available, and she took both of the pinkies I offered, and she didn't regurgitate them, so I'm happy all the way around!
I put her shed in a little thumb tack box to take to school and show everyone my baby's first shed...and it was quite amusing. Most of the time when people would see it, they would go "Eww... why do you have that?" And cringe... There were a few exceptions, like my group of friends I hang out with, and the other snake lovers in my classes. There is a girl named Ashley, and she's kewl about snakes, and we talk about them often. She's got a king snake that's almost 6 feet long and so we just talk about our little babies all the time...
Lastnight I brought her downstairs into the livingroom and the kitchen so everyone could see how vibrant she was right after a shed...and she is so beautiful...but I think I'm the only one who really cared..Anyways...I just wanted to share my joy!
Mwah!
P.S. My mom suggested the name Majik for her lastnight, so that's what we call her now. She's the snow, in case you didn't know...

So cool! Save that shed, and a year from now take it out and compare it to a new shed. You'll be amazed at how much that little baby has grown. I did that when my snow shed a few weeks ago. I got out her first shed and laid it beside the new shed. I was amazed at how tiny she was back then! I'd forgotten how small she was when I got her.

Speaking of shed, does anyone remember the way to count the scales on a shed to tell if you've got a male or female? For the life of me I can't find the thread where that was posted.

Maxx had his first shed (for us) a few days ago - I was pretty excited too... it was cool how slippery he was after he got the old skin off... I had to throw the shed out though... I can get obsessive sometimes and I think my family was worried I was going to start a shed photo album or something...

What's wrong with a shed album? :shrugs: :sidestep:
I'm still waiting on my snake's first shed with me.

Well...that link was very interesting...and I read it...and I think that I've confirmed that Majik is in fact a female like I thought...I counted the subcaudal (correct me if I'm wrong, and that's not what they're actually called...) scales, and I came up with 69, give or take a few, which would indicate female. Yay! I'm happy, expecially since I really wanted her to be a female...which would mean I can breed her in the future! Yay! Assuming Dante' is in fact a male, like I was told....I'll check on the shed he sheds when he sheds...LOL...that reminded me of this one episode of Spongebob Squarepants I saw...LMAO! Okay...
I wanna make a shed album! Woo!
Mwah!

i herad that snakes skin is very bad to keep, and that it carries salmonella after a short period of time

We have all of our snakes first sheds with us in a photo album. I had to start throwing them away as I found them since the girls wanted to keep every single one LOL. I figured the snakes take up enough room, I don't need a bookshelf full of sheds. But we may do a book for each year, that might be kind of fun.

Where on earth did you hear that from? By whom? A pet store!

I seriously don't see how you could get salmonella from something that's dead....I wanna know where you got that too.... Plus, I plan on laminating it...that will be good...

If the snake itself had salmonella, then it could be on the shed, even after several months. If the snake didn't have salmonella, it is highly unlikely that the shed will suddenly turn up with it.

I've kept all of my snake's sheds in ziplock bags. But I think I'm going to throw out some of the middle sized ones, and just keep the tiny baby ones and the most recent. I wonder if I put them all under my house, will the mice stay away...
