what are some signs, what should i look for when he is getting ready to shed? is there anything i can do to help him shed better?

There are two ways (that I know of) to tell if your snake is shedding. Its eyes will turn a milky blue and its scales will get shiny and have a kind of sheen to them. It'll probly seem like its skin is loose too, like grandma skin. I hope that helps! Please keep in mind that I'm still a noob too.

The skin will turn dull, the eyes will hazy over, blueish, then a few days latter the snake will clear up. A few more days pass. then a shed. Around ten days or so. to help it out keep your humidity up. Get a hydrometer. You'll need a level at 40-50%. Misting help. the use of a humid hide help too.

Spray bottle..remember have the water a room temp.
Humid hide.. use to help with the shed. It made from anything (container) a margin tub or something like that, the size of your hide, fill with damp moss or paper towel or cloth. You snake will use the during the shed cycle. But remove it after the shed.
