First Time Corn Owner
Greetings everyone!
I'm a first time corn owner after one of my co-workers who breeds corns suckered me into buying one of her ultramels. I've had a long term bearded dragon in the past so having this little baby has been so much easier to set up. From the time that she badgered me into coming to see the hatchlings and taking one home, I had quite a while to study up on basic corn care. I made sure to drop by the second she began to let the little crawlies go and picked out one of the most eager eaters!
Meet Q'uq'umatz!
Ququ came home in a food container punched with plenty of holes and got to settle in to her new home from inside a cottage chese container with some crumpled paper towels for filling. She lived there while I tuned up a 20L aquarium that sat unused in the closet for years. I honed in on a steady 84 degrees on the glass at the base of the warm side using a UTH, lamp dimmer, and digital thermometer, while the glass thermometer on the other side reads a stable 76 degrees. After carving up a bunch of old, unused flowerpots into hides, I filled the tank with fake plants, toilet paper tubes, and smaller plastic containers. I had a vivarium set up for barely more than the cost of a lid!
Ququ's first feeding happened in her "dining room" (a container small enough to fit through the hatch) and was over in a flash. She scarfed down her first pinky in minutes and I put her dining room inside the aquarium on the warm side with the lid popped on 3 corners. She slowly and carefully "escaped" her feeding chamber, creeped around a little to explore her new environment, and then began to scope out a good hiding spot. After a couple hours of curious exploration (she didn't look the least bit displeased with her bigger environment), she coiled up inside the hide of the middle of the tank and has been digesting there ever since!
I'm totally sold on raising a corn snake!
