I am thinking about using flexwatt tape with a rheostat under my 20 gallon tank as a heat source. The tank will be sitting on a wooden lateral filing cabinet. Do I need to have anything between the Flexwatt and the cabinet? Will it get too hot for the wood? Thanks for your help!

I really like heat tape, it works really well for my needs. The thing to remember with any heat system is air flow. If the heat builds up and has no escape then dangerous situations can arise:D
I have 2 11" wide stripes running down the back of my big rack and they are attached to pegboard. The pegboard allows air to flow around the heat source and just feels warm to the touch. I also use rheostats to control the amount of heat. If you leave a space for the heat to escape and control how much heat you will be ok. I do hope this is not "fine furniture" quality wood as the heat can dry out the wood:)
