Flying with cornsnakes?

Apologies if this actually belongs in the "misc" forum, but I thought moving snakes might be part of husbandry.

Does anyone know of any airlines that will let you take snakes on board with you for a flight? And/or do you know what sort of proceedures are necessary? Do I need to get papers from the vet of a clean bill of health or anything? It looks like I'll be moving, and my options are a) let my dad drive with the snakes from CA to Baltimore, which I'm quite leery about since he's not a herper, b) ship snakes via overnight, which I'm also leery about just cause it's shipping snakes. And I'd probably have to ask a friend to do all the packing and stuff, which I'd hate to do as they've already done a ton of stuff for me with the snakes, or c) fly with them. I much prefer c!!!

There was just a post about this recently.

I would suggest that you ship the animals overnight to the new address when someone can meet the delivery man. And you will have to check the laws in the state that you are moving to. In Tennessee you have to have an importation permit that takes about two weeks to get. Some states will require that the animal has a clean bill of health and you may have to file papers with the state vet.

Hopefully some people can tell you some more info about your state.

I'm not sure about importing into the state, but I do know that you may need a permit to keep your snakes here. Corns are native to Maryland, and permits are handled by MD Department of Natural Resources.

This web site lists when you do or do not need a permit to keep native wildlife:

You definitely need one if you plan to breed your snakes. It is pretty cheap for an annual permit, and relatively hassle-free.

Thanks for posting that. I am a reasident of the Old Line State, also. While I am three snakes away from requiring a permit, from the posts here it looks like that can change quickly.

Hey, thanks guys! And grrrrrrrrrr on them not allowing snakes as carry-ons. Grrr I say. I'm still tempted to pack them in a box and try to sneak them on the plane, thought I'll all the airport and check if Airport Security would let snakes through. The airline doesn't have to know, but I won't lie to the security peeps :p
Barring that, I guess I'll have to figure out how to ship them.
And look into that permit!
Thanks again!

That's good that you wouldn't lie to the security folks....I'm one of them. You may not want to fly with it. I myself would let it through and see nothing wrong with it. Others may not. We see dogs, cats, ferrets and birds all the time. Have even seen frogs and hermit crabs. DO NOT put the snake through the Xray machine. The other pets listed above are not allowed through the xray due to the high levels emmitted by the machines. This would mean that the container he was in would need to be "hand checked". Ensure that the screener knows whats in there BEFORE they open the box. It might also be beneficial to ask for a private screening so other passengers don't see your snake. I would also have someone wait at the airport with you. If the snake is not allowed on, and you have no one to hand him over to, your gonna miss your flight.
Good luck.

Oh, yes, I would never put the snakes through the Xray machine! I would definitely "declare" the snakes and have the people examine them. Good idea to ask for a private screening, I didn't realize that was an option. Also a good idea to have someone wait at the airport.
I just figure if security will let me through, I can seal the snakes in a box and the airline doesn't have to know. I wouldn't do anything dumb like take the snakes out on the flight; I know some people are very afraid of snakes (silly, but I respect that) and the last thing I'd want is an animal getting lose on the flight. It'd just be a box like any other box on the plane :p
Thanks!

If the TSA lets it through, I wouldn't worry about the airline. I would however do what you said and keep it out of sight on the flight. Make sure you ask for a private screening of the box before you hand it over to the TSA screener and make sure you let them know what's in it before they open it, but after you get to private screening. They may have to get a snake lover to check it out (like me)!
