Food, where to get it

if you only own one snake what is the cheapest way to buy food? Where from, how much to buy etc........ Do the mice keep very long in the freezer?

You can order frzen mice from web sites like rodentpro.com and big cheese. you have to buy them in bulk, but they are going to be your cheapest way unless you go to shows and just pick up mice there. if they are in air tight packageing then they can last over a year other wise i would say a good 6-8 months

I buy my mice from a local reptile store. I generally get a month's supply at one time.

Ordering mice online is NOT cost-efficient when you only have one snake. The price of having the mice posted to you can be very high, and isn't really worth it unless you have a LOT of snakes.

The best option is to find a local shop near you that sells them.

Agreed. One must order a VERY large amount for RodentPro to be cost effective. Big Cheese is better, but I would suggest ordering enough pinks, fuzzies, hoppers, and adults to last a LONG time (so the shipping costs are worth it).

I buy locally (local mom & pop, PetCo; PetSmart is expensive). The only problem I have run into is the lack of hoppers in my area. Otherwise, its a personal decision.

You can minimize the costs of shipping by ordering several sizes at once. That being said, even paying shipping charges, ordering online is cheaper than what you would find in a pet store.

I agree, but the problem can be ponying up the cash right away for what will be a year's worth of food. It makes financial sense, but may not be feasible at the moment.

There is no set time for when to move on; it depends on the growth of your snake. By all means, though, a 3 year old snake should be eating adults!

The rule of thumb is this (sorry if you already know): Offer food whose width is one-and-a-half times the width of the largest part of the snake. The lump left by the food should be visible for 24-48 hours. If the lump isn't there after about 12, it's time to "bump up." For example, one pinky to two pinkies in a single feeding in preparation for a fuzzy. I fed 2 pinks for 5 feedings before I went to a single fuzzy.

i've got 3 snakes and i order my mice from Big Cheese it is much cheaper than buying mice from the local pet stores. they charge over $1 per mouse. no matter what size they are.
with big cheese i pay a lot less even with shipping. for 50 large pinks and 50 fuzzies i only paid around $45. if i had bought the same amount of mice from the local pet store i would have paid over $100.
the mice keep well in the freezer and i go through the 100 mice in about 4 months. nothing goes to waste.
i dont like rodentpro because you have to order at least 100 of one size. and i dont need 100 pinks. i need two different sizes of mice because my snakes are different sizes. two of them are on fuzzies and one is still on pinks.

Would you recommend it for someone with only 1 snake, though? I don't think I went through 50 pinks with my 2 snakes before moving up to the fuzzies, and I'm not sure if I'll ever hit 50 fuzzies.

SerpentPets Grow-Up pack is what I like. The shipping isn't terrible because I live within the blue area on the map.

I get mine at the local reptile show. The prices are really cheap. The Petco by me has them but they are about $1.50 a piece for fuzzies.

You could see if there is anybody in the same area as you, who may want to split an online order with you? It would cut the price of shipping in half.

Are you in Tennessee? There are some members in TN who might be willing to split shipping with you. In fact, if you are in Western TN, I need to order some mice soon. Let me know where you are.

I am in West TN, I have not hot my snake yet. I'm asking all these questions so when I get one I will be ahead of the game, hopefully soon. I'll let you know, thanks

I'm sure its outrages. I don't like things shipped to me unless I can use my account b/c I work for fed ex

I don't live in the shipping area either. Shipping was only $10 more for me. It's still not a bad value in my opinion. I got 45 mice for $51. I know they're quality feeders, they're packaged well, etc., etc. It's definitely worth shooting them an email. Again, just my opinion. Good luck.

American Rodent has free shipping within a certain area with orders over $50, and they have s[pecial prices right now which are pretty low.
