forced regurge

So Im watching dirty jobs, and they're collecting snakes and forcefully making them regurgitate, and saying it's a bit uncomfortable, but they don't mind it and it poses no threat to their health.

the hell?

That's ridiculous. Why are they making them regurge in the first place? What purpose does it serve?

scientific, of course, but still, that doesn't justify endangering numerous snakes. I guess it's that, or cut them open. Still don't agree with it.

Do you possibly have a link to the show that showed the forced regurge?

I can't believe anyone would make an animal, no matter what animal forcibly regurge thier meal just for science. Of course i guess rethinking that, there's many things us humans do to animals that would make most of us toss our cookies, for the "sake of science".

Wish I had cable so I could watch the show....Doesn't seem right to "make" a snake regurge for scientific study though.

I saw that episode a few weeks ago. I think they collect water snakes and bring them back to this place. Then they rub their stomaches to make them regurge to see what the snakes have eaten. I think they are looking for mud puppies or something.

I don't think it is harmful to the snakes, however, a bit uncomfortable and then they have to go back and find another meal. Also the girl he was working with is someone who know what she is doing. Just my opinion.

I guess not having seen the episode, I should have kept my comments to myself.
It still doesn't sound right to make a snake regurge, but I guess that's just me.

Thanks Dave for the explanation.

How do you force a snake to regurge anyway?!!
Actually ,I would like know to in case I have to do it.
My small corn just swallowed a chipping whilst eating its first fuzzy.
If it doesn't bring it back up itself, would I need to "force" it and if I do will it do it any harm?

No! Forcing it to regurge will do just as much or even more harm then the wood-chip will. Just let nature take its course and hope that it naturally passes. Remember to feed in a separate container next time, or put down a paper plate.

I think it will have to be the seperate container 'cos he usually likes to take it into his hide before he eats it.Thanks

Be watchful using a paperplate...sometimes snakes get a little excited when feeding and the food ends up in the substrate regardless.

I would recommend either putting a towel over and around the feeding tub to make the entire tub a hide, or putting the hide in with the food, if you've the room. In this way, there is NO risk of ingesting substrate.

just my $.02...

About that episode of dirty jobs. I watched it and the snakes were being taken care of and were perfectly fine. It sounds odd yes but she knew what she was doing. It was informative.
