Fun thing my snake's been doing.

I have a male rescue Amel Motley/Stripe thing, who, when I received him, was terrified of everything, even his own shadow. He would rattle his tail and bite all the time, hide in the darkest corner of his viv, absolutely panic when I handled him, just, everything.
He has four hides in his tank. I felt really bad that he was so insecure, so I added an extra one towards the front of the tank, hoping maybe it would help. It got to the point, prior to that, that he rarely ever even came out to drink WATER because he was so scared. After working with him, he got a lot better, began poking his head out and hiding less and less.
So... one day, I noticed his tiny toilet paper roll hide had been moved or rolled to the spot right next to the water dish. I thought maybe he was having a snake party and trashed the place like they sometimes do, so I moved it back. But sure enough, every single day, the hide had been moved BACK to the place next to the water dish, and one night, I even observed him moving it, curling up in it, and carefully drinking water.
I started to think maybe he WANTED it there so he could drink water and still feel secure instead of being exposed lol. Needless to say, I've kept it there until about a month ago, when he finally grew into being a confident enough snake to hang out, fully exposed, without panicking. Sometimes, I still catch him moving the hide to the water dish.
So basically I am now convinced my snake is a genius and had to tell someone this story, because my friends think I'm nuts when I get excited over such a simple little thing.

aha,

that's a pretty cute story.. and I think snakes are much smarter than most people lead on.
nothing like mammals but theirs stuff going on in those tiny brains.

And here is a photo of him in said hide :)

What a cute story! I had a snake put her paper towel tube crosswise over her big water bowl, without getting it wet. How???

That's so cute it's awesome. And bloody brilliant for snake behavior. Isis shows similar hide while drinking preference, and will stretch just enough out of her hide to reach her bowl and drink.
