geting ready to lay?

REPTILE ADDICT
this is my first year breeding corns and i have a normal female that is getting ready to lay anytime. she had her post lay shed 4/3/10. she has been restless this evening she is all over her cage from one end to the other climbing up the sides of the tank and seems like she is trying to get out. is this normal behavior? i always thought that they just stayed in their lay box most the time till they layed.
thanks

Sounds to me like she is getting ready to lay and may not really like the box offered so I would keep an eye on her incase she lays outside the box. That way you can get them real quick. Good luck!

You could try moving the lay box. If you have it at the warm end, try moving it to the cool end or the middle temp zone and vice versa. If it's not at her preferred temp then she might keep looking for an alternative.

What substrate are you using inside the lay box? Perhaps she'd prefer something else. Vermiculite or sphagnum moss are the usual ones - if given a choice, mine prefer the moss.

How damp is the substrate? Could it be too wet or too dry?

Sometimes they can be picky over where the entry hole in the box is. I do have a couple that express a preference for having the hole in the lid rather than the side (yes, I know, I do spoil them...).

There are a number of variables about the lay box that could be causing her to not settle. However, I usually find that no matter what, they will eventually realise that it's the best place to lay - even if it isn't their idea of the perfect place to lay. You can either try and figure out what's causing the problem, or just sit back and wait.

i have the lay box in the mid section she has been on the hotter side of the lay box i might try and move it.
i am using sphagnum moss and i dont think it is to wet i just get it wet enough so i can barely get a drop out by squeezing and check it every other day so it does not dry out.
i dont think the holes are the prob she is in her lay box now on the hot side. but who knows
thanks

It's perfectly normal for the females to do a lot of roaming between pre-lay shed and actual deposition of the eggs. They'll go here and there, into the box for a while, all over the place, back in the box, and more of the same. She'll most likely settle down to stay 24-48 hours before actual laying takes place. Can you check on her without actually physically moving her when she's in the nest box?

i can check on her withiut disturbance i am using a rubber maid container with clear sides.

Iknow. I had an accidental hookup on 4/2. I have a longer wait than you to see if anything comes of it. Just be sure to post pics after your lady lays her eggs :)

lol the wait is killing me

Believe me, we understand the feeling! The hardest part of breeding snakes as compared to mammals for me personally is that once the clutch is laid it's back to waiting again - for pippies!!

no kidding i also breed leopard geckos and they do the same i had two eggs hatch today after a 45 day wait. beautiful babies

Keep waiting! ;) I know what you mean, though. I just had one that didn't lay until 21 days after her prelay shed. I find most of mine lay right around two weeks past their prelay sheds. Hang in there!

Aw say it aint so, lol 2 whole weeks after pre-lay shed? Too long lol Too long! Just kidding, as long as the females are ok, I say they can take their time (can ys tell this is my first year expecting?)
