hey yall iam new to snakes and this forum. iam getting a corn snake tommorrow but i have questions. In my tank if i have the heat lamp and under tank heater (UTH) it gets to a surface temp of 100 F. so what should i do?? and also the place iam buying it from tommorrow have 2 kinds of corns, Amel Corn and Ghost Corns so which one would u like to have?? which one looks cooler??

Thanx,
Maleeh

i'd go for the...

ghost corn, i think they are cool looking and i already have two amels. 20 gallon long is good for their whole lives, but if you are getting a hatchling you may want to start off with a smaller enclosure for a while, or just make sure your guy has lots of options for hiding. also, a 20 gallon tank is okay for an adult, but you might want to get a larger enclosure so that your snake can get more exercise. i have one of my snakes in a 20 gallon right now and will probably upgrade to a larger tank in about a year and a half. the temperature in the enclosure should be between 72 and 85 degrees fahrenheit, so 100 degrees is pretty high and your guy may be mad uncomfortable, can you see about getting a lower wattage bulb? you may be fine with just the heating pad depending on the temperature of the room your snake will be in.

Many ways to reduce temps.
1) lower wattage bulb
2) raise the lamp further away from the viv.
3) buy an electrical thermostat.

Just make sure that your heating apparatus all point towards ONE end of the viv, to establish a proper temperature gradient. 20long is considered minimum size for an adult snake. However, some snakes are as small as 3' when full grown and that could be very comfortable in a 20long. Like norbert said, just make sure there are lots of hides.

ps. Ghost and anery corns are awesome! I don't like the 'sunny' and way too bright look of an amel.

If your only going to have one corn snake in your life then Id say spoil it. Give it a 50 gallon instead of a 20, place some fake plants in the aquarium, use cocunut fiber for bedding. U can place up to 6-8 hides in a 50 gallon, put a fountain in the viv for a sores of water. If your getting a hatchling you wont realy see it much for the first year even in a 20 gallon, but when it gets to be a year old and it will start feeling more secure and youll see it all the time. When you get a hatchling you should use a harty bedding like cocunut fibre, your snake will borrow very easily and feel more comfortable, vs newspaper or wood chips. Just be sure to feed them in a separate container.

thanx yall but i dont have that much space and a 50 gallon in houston is 200 dollars and a 40 is $149 so iam gonna use my ten and then get a 20 for life if i got $$$ i will get a 30.. mabye...

is a 30g. good for a life time corn??
is 20 g. long fine for life??

Setup as below:

Climbing branch ----Plants------
Hide-------Water---Hide-------
UTH-UTH----------------------

is that a okay setup??

As long as UTH's only cover 1/2 of the tank at most, you seem fine. What's your substrate?

Also, aquariums are EXPENSIVE! but... if you shop around and wait for opportunity to strike, you can get a good deal. I ended up getting my 20long for $30 less then expected, because I spent an hour searching on the internet. I found a 35gal for only $40 and I may go get it (pending employment).

Also, I have never really seen it on here, but uth's get the glass REALLY hot and since snakes burrow towards the heat, they can burn themselves on heat sources, so I have a "terrarium carpet" between the glass above the uth and the substrate, just to be safe.

Have a couple of hide with a 20 gallon. I have my 6 month old in a 20 gallon and I have 3 hides for her. Snakes need to feel secure in the environment they live in.

Pick up the Cornsnake Manual by Kathy Love great book and info on how to take care of cornsnakes. Never feed on the substrate always on paper towel or newspaper. Do searches on this forum for ideas and information and good luck with your new snake.

okay the 20 gallon long iam getting is from petsmart for 29.99 thats super cheap in houston!!LOL!! So paper for substrate too. also how long should the snake be when i should put it in a 20 gallon?? becasue iam gonna buy the 20 gallon but i have to save up. and is 20 gallon tooo small for a full grown corn??
is 30 fine then??

And you will ending up getting another Corn at some stage, I can almost guarantee it, welcome to the Corn Snake Addiction
