Getting a corn snake soon

Hi everyone
I'm getting a new corn snake within the next few weeks.

I found a nice spot in the bedroom right besides the computer desk. I'll have to install a shelf for it as there is no other place available fot the 20L aquarium I got yesterday.

The temperature in the room is about 20C year round with heating and air conditionning. I plan on using aspen or newspaper as substrate for now.

I'm guessing I would need an undertank heater AND a ceramic heat emitter on top for the warmer part and nothing on the other half of the tank.

Also, I'm pretty sure I need a light for it as that corner stays rather dark all day even with the curtains open. when I say dark I mean too dark to read without hurting your eyes but still a bit of light all day.

The humidity level is about 40-50% year round as well as we have 6 aquariums and we actually need a dehumidifier to control it.

Now if I get a light for it, what would be best? A regular neon for the home or a reptile UV lamp? Or would it be fine without the light altogether?

I don't think you need the ceramic heat emitter. Usually the UTH is good enough. And I don't use any light for mine because my tank is near the window, so I can't really help you out with that.

Thanks
I've read somewhere that corn snakes don't really need daylight as they are nocturnal. Does this hold true? I'll try the uth first and see what it does to the temp.

I also wanted to know if I could use regular towels as a substrate for now. I'd clean them every 3 days or so when I do the laundry. Would this be ok?

If they're nocturnal, doesn't that mean they need the light to go to sleep? I'm not so sure, but I've read that they should have natural daylight during the day. And I think a lamp might dry out the tank too much.

I'm not sure about the towel. But you can use shredded newspaper if you can't get a hold of some wood substrate from a pet store.

Even though corns are nocturnal, they still need a day/night cycle. A fluorescent fish tank light works will without raising the temps any.

I wouldn't use towels. Stick with aspen or newspaper.

So aspen it'll be

the last thing that worries me is that the room will pickup the "pet store" smell. I don't know what causes it but I have friends who degus and rats in the room (4 PETS TOTAL) and it smelled like a pet store.

Does aspen do that, i've never actually smelled it!
