Getting first corn :D

mrewildstyle,

What exactly is a compact florescent???

It is about the same size as a normal incandescent bulb and screws into a normal bulb socket…in my case a Fluker’s 8 inch Light & Heat Reflector Dome:

actually i think i'm going to buy one of these bulbs as you suggested to provide some lgiht... should i get any special kinda? I noticed that most people here say that corns don't need UV

ahhh i bought the UTH as suggested and set it up under my tank as the instruction manual said. Then i decided AFTER to read the rest of the manual (hmm) and it pointed out that you shouldn't place the UTH under the tank for burrowing animals as they can dig down and sit on the glass resulting in a burn. I do know that cornsnakes love to burrow in substrate and after already sticking it on (it says u can't remove as it will damage internal wires) should i buy something to go between the glass and the snake? suchas repti carpet or something?. Thanks :)

Under the tank is fine, as long as it is regulated to 85 degrees at the hottest point, which is on the glass at the center of the UTH under the substrate. Put the thermostat probe there as well as the digital thermometer probe. Mount them down with hot glue or a suction cup or silicone glue. NEVER use tape inside a viv.

You can get a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with hygrometer (humidity) at WalMart for about $12. Whatever you get make sure it has a probe.

For a thermostat you can get a low cost ZooMed 500R online for about $22 plus shipping (different in Canada I assume). Reptilesupply.com is where I got mine from. At a pet shop, if you can even find one, it will run closer to $45. If you want a higher end thermostat, get a Ranco or Johnson Controls for around $75 or a Herpstat for $109. The ZooMed 500R will work fine for 1 corn snake however.

You can also use a rheostat or lamp dimmer rather than a thermostat, but it will have to be checked and adjusted multiple times per day as ambient temperatures change. Thermostats are worth the money as they adjust automatically for ambient room temps.

I couldn't tell from the pictures, but make sure you have an escape proof wire screen lid with clips to hold it down. An aquarium hood is no good.

yeah i have a locking screen lid. the lid on in the picture was from when i had my bearded dragon before as well as the flourescent light which i've found out i wont be needing :p thanks for the help though:)

sorry for all the questions guys, thanks for all ur help though.

yay :) going back to the store to buy my corn today :D so happy. have to wait until after 5 though cause i have to go do something at my work :(
i'll be sure to take and post pictures for you guys. thanks for all your help.

I wouldn't put the snake in with an unregulated heat mat, he could get seriously burned as they can get up over 120 degrees farenheit without a thermostat or rheostat to control them.

Good luck with your new corn snake.

yeah i have a rheostat controlling it and i'm going to just check with a thermometer every now and then to make sure it's ok until i have some money to go and get a thermostat
