Getting Gigggy With it!

At what age do the corns begin to well ...get...randy... I want to know this because I want to try to keep my (soon to have) snakes together as much as safly possible so the can form a bond. But I dont want them to get preg. too early.

not age, but size

it really isn't a matter of age, as much as it is a matter of size. Allow me to elaborate...

As you know, being exothermic (i.e. cold-blooded) a snakes metabolism is dependant upon ambient temperatures (and, to a lesser degree, I believe, weather or not the snake is digesting.) I'm not encouraging anyone to keep their young snakes too hot in order to make them grow faster - that will just make a snake sick.

A male will be "ready" sooner than a female, in so far as there is no ill effect for a male attempting to mate prematurely. The problem for a female mating too young (i.e. too small) is that she stands a good chance of becoming egg-bound. Of course I'm no expert, but of the snakes I've heard of that had a small early clutch they still became "regular" breeders once they grew.

So what, then, is the appropriate size for a female before attempting breeding? I'd like to hear someone with more experiencec answer that one....

I would start to worry around 2 years. Around 3 years and over 30 inches is the minimum safe breeding size for females. Just keep them seperate unless you want to handle both at the same time. Under close supervision, you'd notice breeding activity in your hands. I doubt a corn snake is able to "bond" with another snake.

Why couldnt it? Not to be argumentitive or anything, but just because they are not mammels, does not mean they can not have effection. I do not beleave there is any living creature out there who have no emotions...even if it is as simple as "must reproduce and eat" Considering all emotions begin with instinct. Then all creatures have emotions. Just sometimes we can not see them because they are not as ovious at a cats purr or a dogs wagging tail.
****steps down from soapbox****

Well, corn snakes are solitary animals except for when they are mating. I can't read a snake's mind, so I can't say if a snake is ever fond of his/her cagemate or if they're just putting up with each other. I wouldn't say snakes are devoid of emotion, either, but I don't know if this means they can feel affection for another snake.

A male can get horny as a yearling. A female could mate and become gravid at this age, but it's waaay too early for her. A female should be about 3 ft. and 300 grams to be safely bred. However, if kept with a male, chances are she will end up being bred earlier than this. Breeding too soon is risky, as you probably know, and the female may end up being egg bound.

Well I know that there is a post on this froum of a YEARLING that has breed prematurely due to cage cohabitation. I think that all things considered the safest thing to do is cage them seperately. If you must cage together than I wouldn't make it a co-ed cage. same sex is safer.:) ok so I'm a kill-joy! But it isn't worth the risk.If you want them to be accustom to in another then have supervised visits or get them out together w/ you. Swimming in the tub is fun for them and really cool to watch too.

 Just my $2(inflation)!
