When I first started feeding him, he would start eating the mouse in seconds, but know it takes at least 10 minuets for him to eat, and often I have to leave the room.
Is this normal?
 
it certainly isn't abnormal.
As long as your snake is still eating fine, with no regurgitation, and pooping regularly, I wouldn't worry whether it needs peace to eat or not.
