GETTING MY FIRST SNAKE

I'm getting my first corn snake, adopting him. He is one and a half years old, and in order to adopt him I need to fill out a questionnaire, to make sure I know what I need to do.

I have struggled to find the answers to these questions, or for some have merely struggled to find exact values or the correct way to articulate my answer, elsewhere, and was wondering if you guys could help.

What vivarium size does this species require? [I'm getting a 4ft wide one, but this is asking for a species specific answer]

What other equipment do they require? (I.e. lighting, heating, stats etc.) [I have heating pad, but is that all equipment wise?]

How often should the equipment be changed? (I.e. UV lighting)

What temperatures should the species be kept at? Hot and Cold end

How would you measure the temperature and humidity? [you don't need to measure the humidity for a corn snake, right?]

What times should there equipment be turned on and off?

What should the temperature at night drop too?

What substrate is suitable to use? [Aspen shavings??]

What decorations would you be using in their enclosure? [2 hidey things, water, climby thing?]

How often does their enclosure need a deep clean? [3-6 weeks with spot cleaning in between?]

Should you bath them and how often?

Do they need any supplement? If so what and how often?

What do you know about egg laying? [I'm getting a male snake, so I'm not sure if this is worth answering]

What is brumation?

What are hunger strikes?

What is a fecal test?

How often should they have a fecal test?

Answers to any of these questions would be really, really helpful, or pointing me in the right direction for where to find them would be great!

Thankyou!

I will direct you to one of two books. One is Corn Snakes in Captivity by Don Soderberg and the other is Corn Snakes: the Comprehensive Owners Guide by Kathy Love.

I could give you answers to the questions but there are differences of opinion on many of these things. It is better that you look up the answers in these books and give the reference. The person who wrote the questions may disagree but will know that you looked it up in a reference book respected in the corn snake world. Both books are available on Kindle so that's an instant download.

If you can't find an answer in the book or something is confusing come back and we can try to fill in the blanks. I read Don's book before I got my first corn snake and got Kathy's book shortly afterwards. I still refer to them.

I have submitted the questionnaire! Hopefully there won't be any problems. Thankyou for your help.

If you guys have any personal tips and tricks for keeping snakes, your favourite decorations, things to look out for, that would be much appreciated!

Thankyou!

Welcome! Most of your questions can be found right here. Check out the FAQ and you can also 'search' for answers. I Googled "brumation' and found it right away. Have fun with your new snake and send pics our way!

As far as fun things for your snake, there's only so many variations on the theme. Do hang out and also check out the DIY section for ideas. Please let us know how it goes and enjoy your snake!

What ever you use for the water just make sure it's heavy and can't be knocked over/tipped or at least wider at the bottom changing day old bedding isn't fun lol, also locks/ or something to secure the cage corns especially are very good at escaping, infrared thermometer for measuring temps because you want the floor temps in the Viv not air. (Not needed but very helpful to have, a cheap kitchen scale for weighing the snake and the mice your feeding at meal time)
