Getting young force fed corns onto normal feedin habits hsi

I have a 5 month old Corn Snake that was originally fed Anole Lizards for his first 4 feedings. He seems to have no taste for Pinkies. I've tried every to get him to eat rodents on his own. Researched, contacted experts and armatures alike. I had no choice to start assist/force feeding him.

We've got it down to an art. Takes me less than 5 min to get it down. When I put him down he pushes it down with no problem. He actually gets more active and starts looking for more. I can get two Pinkies down him in a feeding (with a short break in between, of course).

What I want to know is how long will I have to continue this. It's be 3 1/2 months. It's time for him to eat on his own. Any suggestions or anyone who's had the same issue?

How big is this snake? My snake that was born in Sept 9 who eats on his own weighs 19g, but his clutch mate who's only ever eaten one pinky head on his own end of Nov. is only 6g and I am force feeding adult mice tails at this time. He's gotten more energy, but after the first time I thought the second time I'd only push it down part way and then let him try to work it down on his own but he tried his best to spit it out, so I had to push all the way down. So frustrating. I have now three adult mice to use for tails and after that I'm hoping he will start eating pinky heads on his own again. But I've literally tried all the tricks out there to get him eating and he's just not interested which is so weird because the day I got him he devoured that head like no other and I thought, YES!!! He will be fine, but then he just never showed interest again. And is in fact scared of them when I try to slap feed him or initiate a strike response, he won't strike at anything, just wants to get away from it, even if I hold it in feeding tongs he goes away from it. He did smell the tail last time, but nothing more than that. It needs to be a two person job also because it was super hard getting his mouth open and then trying to keep it open while maneuvering the tail in before he shut his mouth again.:headbang:

I totally feel ya, Robin. I tried everything from braining a f/p pinkie to smearing the brains on a live one to actually braiding a live one (and no, I will never be the same after that experience), as well as all the other methods out there.
This might sound awful, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one with a super placid corn that actually seems scared of pinkies.

Anyway, my snake is 6 months old now, so I understand the ongoing frustration. I do have advice with force feeding though that might make it a lot easier.

1) Use Pinkies, which obviously you're doing.

2) always do it in a quiet room with as little noise and movement around you (ie; your empty bedroom with no music and the door closed). And no cats or other pets lurking around.

4) this is the tough one, but after trying to force him with a second pair of hands, I actually found this easier. Do it alone.

5)Hold his head firmly with your index and middle finger on top and your thumb underneath. His head should be at a right angle and your bottom two fingers should hold him tight. When you get the Pinky in or when he's just fed up with situation, he'll wrap his tail around his head and your hand. Trap his tail between your knees or thighs. It will get loose, but not in time to interfere.

6) Pick the Pinky up with a good grip using tongs, or your fingers (remember youre holdin him, so the whole theory about not getting your scent on his food, is already out the window). Now gently push the pinkie's nose against the sides of his mouth, back and forth. He WILL dislocate his jaw eventually. When he does push the Pinky in until it hooks onto his teeth. This buys you time to grab a narrow blunt object (tongs or a blunt chopstick). Don't shove the pinkie down in a straight line. Try to get it past his jaw by alternating pushing it in on either side of his mouth like he would do on his own. Believe me, it gets down so much easier and he's less likely to push it up. Once it's past the jaw, use your holding hand to make sure he won't crinkle up to push it out, and then push that sucker straight down at least an inch.

4) then let him go. Perferably on your bed. Give him space. I find confining him in a tub freaks him out even more.
He'll do the rest. Watch that it's going down and not up. If you didn't get it down far enough he may expel it. Try to catch it before it comes all the way out, and push it down again.
If it comes all the way out, leave him alone and try again later.

Hope this helps. :)

My record is 4 minutes. And he still likes to be handled, so he's obviously not that traumatized.

My question is, how long do I have to keep on doing this??? What's the average time/size/age when they will start eating on their own?

He's more like a really long chopstick. but then again, it sounds like he's been eating more regularly than Slytherin. How often does your guy she'd.
Kurt is like clockwork now. Every month for the past 3.

Only one of my snakes has ever shed and that was the one who is 19g. I assume they only shed when they grow and the other two have never gained weight. :(
I did just force feed Slytherin another part of a tail and I did what you suggested and put her on my bed with the end sticking out and she did finish it up on her own, thank God, so that's progress. After these tails are gone I will try to offer her another pinky head and see if she goes for it on her own. Hopefully that will give her enough sustenance to try on her own and I'll stretch out the time between feedings so she might be hungrier. Fingers crossed.
So does your snake appear to have grown a lot since you've gotten him since he's been shedding?

Yes, he has grown. About a 3rd bigger I'd guess. I just realized it myself while holding him last night.
I know this may sound hard, but in my opinion, you really should be feeding Slytherin (damn, I love that name) whole pinkies. There's practically no nutrition in mouse tails and I bet they're a bitch to get down.

Trust me...and all the legitimate Internet references...when I tell you that your snake can and will easily digest a Pinky. His skin will stretch (sometimes a lot) but that's normal. Pinkies are easier to shove down.
Also, having him hungry isn't a problem. Trust me, he's hungry. He's just being difficult because he's a that kind of eater right now.
I currently feed my guy every 5 days. I alternate. 1 pinky, then 2 pinkies. I wanted to get his weight up and him used to feedings. I'm going down to once a week now. He's big enough for a fuzzy, but i prefer two pinkies instead.
*If youre gonna have something shoved down your throat, it may as well be small ;)

However, I strongly advise against power feeding, which is basically what I did. Especially for long periods of time. It's just like over-eating with people. Gets them fat fast and causes health issues.

Keep me posted. We seem to be in the same boat.

Slytherin is so small I don't think I could begin to fit a pinkie down him, and I tried a half of one cut lengthwise but it didn't work as it just bent and I gave up. The tails are super easy because they're long and skinny just slide right down. It's what one of the longtime forum members suggested. She's a breeder so I figure she knows a lot more than me, I've never owned a snake before.

I don't know how long you will have to hand/force feed yours... but on January second, I had a stubborn little amel ( clutch hatched august 24-26) eat on her own for the very first time ever.... and she did it again last night!

She kept refusing, I heated, brained, tried live (which got the other nonfeeders to start eating) I wasn't willing to buy a lizard to scent. So I began stuffing tails from the larger food down her throat Though it was more like assisting her, once you got it started she would go hand over hand with me working it down as she went.. For a while I gave up offering her hot pinkies and just fed her tails and feet.. Then with the new year I tried again with a tiny boiled (Dropped into boiling hot water then put in container and covered with dark cloth) I really expected when I checked later to see the pinky still laying there but it was gone!! I did the same thing last night and got the same - she ate! (YAYYYYYY confirmed with bulge in the snake)

So that's how long it took mine to finally eat, I guess if you give them enough time they finally decide that pinkies are food and that they actually want to eat.

Have you tried boiled or Ivory or blue Dawn scented?

I think I'd let him get good and hungry, then try an anole scented pink. Let an anole trample around on the thawed (or boiled) pink, in a deli cup, for a little while.
