Would I be right in saying that wild species have alot better immune system than CB?

It can be even more complicated. On the west coast (USA) there are programs to help find adoptive homes for Califonia Desert Tortoises. They used to encourage people who captured them to turn them in for release back into the desert. They found that re-releasing "wild caught" tortoises that were taken from pet owners caused massive die offs in local wild populations. Some pathogen they were picking up in captivity was to blame.

These guys live over a century, and can now never be let go. There is a whole network devoted to placing them with responsible owners. You have to live in an area with the proper climate, build a minimum sized/secured outdoor
pen ahead of time and fill out a bunch of forms to even be considered for ownership. I believe you are also legally bound to return it when you pass away as most will outlive several owners.

This all, of course, diverts time and dollars away from the actual research and conservation efforts that were going on in the first place. The damage may have also never been noticed if the wild population wasn't already being closely studied. It's something to consider before re-releasing even a W/C animal....

For example: The Box Turtle. They have a home range of about 100 square yards (think about that, it's only a 30 foot by 30 foot area...very small). When they're taken out of the wild and re-released, their own instincts kill them unless you're careful. They have such a strong homing instinct that they will continue to search for something familiar (all the while ignoring hunger and thirst) until they either find it or die of starvation/dehydration. So if you release something like that, you have to let it go EXACTLY where it came from, otherwise you might as well just kill it yourself because that's basically what you're doing anyway. [/B]

If you are interested, I can get you contact information for a biologist who is working on an experiment with the national park service here on Long Island. All the development lately is causing a lot of problems for our local Eastern Box Turtle. He is taking rescued turtles and placing them in a large outdoor fenced area in the William Floyd Estate National park. The hope is that after a certain amount of hibernation cycles, thier homing instinct will "re-set" to the new location.

He is probably a few years away from conclusive results, but if it works, it may be something worth keeping tabs on.
