In early 2006 I did a pairing of Amber x Hypo, het caramel, ph ghost...well that is what I thought at the time...
The resultant hatchlings proved that the female Fleur carried the Ultra gene inherited from her sire, Ramses...our Caramel, het ultra. The pairing also proved that Molson, the Amber male was also het amel, as an ultramel was produced. From that clutch I held back 1.2 Hypo Caramels (what I thought were Ambers) and 0.1 Ultramel.
Now here we are 2 years later and I can't believe the difference in what I thought were Ambers from the same clutch...and I don't mean a slight variation...this is noticeably different.
Here are the two siblings...
Now for comparison, here is the sire of the clutch, Molson...
Now here is the puzzler to me...is Jasper an Amber? Or is he a Golddust? But on the other hand...the sire Molson was produced by Simon Fung, who sold him to me as an Amber, but then Simon liked to dabble in genetics so who knows what was in that mix originally that produced Molson. So that brings me to another puzzler...if Jasper is the Amber...what is Wheat? Her sibling sister Birch is exactly like her. Is this just a sexual colour differentiation...male to female. Well to that I would have to answer 'NO' simply because another Canadian breeder has an amber male from this same clutch that in colouration is identical to Wheat and Birch....hmmm, so now I'm wondering.
I did have Jemma, a female Amber adult (unproven) I purchased in late '07. She was definitely of breedable size this year so I decided to give Jasper an early initiation. Jemma has laid a clutch of eggs which should pip in the middle of August so we will see compatibility of the hypo genes there.
Now maybe I'm off my rocker here...but I'd appreciate any comments/opinions on what some of you folks who have worked with ambers think. Am I dealing with two like ambers just showing different colouration...or is this the visual difference we would expect when two different hypos are at work along side the caramel gene?
