Goodbye little Monty.....

Gralena

Corn Snake Diva
I am sad to say that our little okeetee, Monty, passed away last night. Although I am very sad, he really struggled the last few months with multiple regurges and I am glad he is not suffering anymore. He was my 13yr old son's first snake and he is really bummed right now. I will say that our love for corn snakes started with Monty and has only grown brighter....despite all of the difficulties. I plan to use this as a learning experience. I am attaching a couple of our favorite photos of Monty. I think he would have grown up to be a beautiful okeetee.

That's too bad, if not unexpected. :(

Corns are generally hardy, so the "god of the law of averages" will likely deal you and your son a better hand next time. Don't give up! The next one will likely be the one. Go a little older this time, and get past that delicate hatchling stage. Monty will have shown you the way, and you'll have much better luck next time!

I'm sorry to hear that Monty has passed over, but its probably for the best by your descriptions :( We lost my daughter's first snake too, although she was four when she died. Interestingly enough, I took it a lot harder than my daughter did.

I hope your son will soon be ready for another snake.... not to replace Monty, but in addition too.

I'm sorry to hear that! :(

I sincerely hope you (and your son) decide to jump back on the horse. I lost a GORGEOUS little bloodred girl pretty recently. I really had to think about whether keeping/breeding was worth the occasional downside that comes with the territory. I realized I get too much enjoyment out of my collection on a daily basis to let this destroy the hobby for me. I hope you'll come to the same conclusion.

My deepest condulances to you and your family for your loss..The loss of a pet of any kind can be hard to take. I wish you much luck in the future and hope you keep your heart open to future pets :0(

I am so sad to hear he died.
My heart is heavy for you all...especially your son.
That little Monty was very lucky that you all worked so hard to give him the best.

When our Stretchy died it seemed like our son was never going to smile again...and we certainly were 'done with snakes'.

We now hove 2 beautiful corns and are rediscovering their joys...our son said it makes his heart happy to have them around.

I am sorry for your loss as well. As a few have said though I hope you get another snake, "not to replace but in addition." I also hope your son does not take it too hard, I am not even sure how I would go about talking to him of the subject, but you might want to see if he'd be interested in another snake before you got one.

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts....as far as corn snakes go, we have really just begun. Monty opened the door for us and gave us a new hobby we can do together (not too many things a 13yr old wants to do with his mom)....We already had a second corn, Cleo, that my son bought for me in January for my birthday. So, I know he is ok with getting another corn snake in the near future to continue his love for the hobby.....he just already said he does not want Monty's viv decorations to go in a different snake's viv....so they are being retired. :) Thanks again!

It sounds like he's a really emotionally healthy kid, and is dealing really well. (AKA Good job on the parenting thing. :) )

I am sorry for you loss. I hope your son is dealing with this ok. I also hope you all will be able to find a nice replacement.

Sorry for your loss. As a mom I know exactly how it feels to see your kids sad. I hope all goes well and your son sounds like a great kid. :)

Thanks again, everyone. You know, I had my son when I was pretty young (not exactly planned :)) ...but I am so proud of him and the young man he has become. He is SO funny, and just an all round cool kid to have. Ironically, snakes have really caused him to open up to me so much more. Snake feeding day gives us an hour each week to really hang out and talk....even about other things going on in his life. I HIGHLY recommend for parents to find something to connect with their kids on. I NEVER dreamed it would be snakes for us....but I was the one who had to go outside because I was crying the other night.

Sorry about Monty. My 6 yr old went through the same thing when we lost Vern, our first corn, too. His stuff, viv included, are all (for now - until he catches a frog this summer) retired.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. As far as cage decor...it's probably best that you don't reuse anyway unless you are certain that your snake did not die from something contagious. I'd start off with clean, brand new stuff for your new future snake!
