After what seems forever, I finally brought a little guy (or gal) home last night.

Now i've left him be all of today, should I leave him for another day or so before I handle him?
some people have said I should start handling him right away, the guy I got him from said leave him for a few days, it's hard to know what to do with conflicting advice!

am I right in thinking there's no way to tell what sex it is until he's a bit older?

I haven't got a name for him or her yet either - somehow I need to know if it's a boy or girl first!

I hope to take some pictures of him soon, but he hasn't come out of his hide. He will poke his head out when nobody's around but soon as he sees movement in the room he's gone.

Oh and this maybe a daft question, but do they drink every day like mammels and birds? - obviously I have water in there at all times, I have a little hamster sized dish of water in there which I will refresh daily, but I just wondered if they do drink regularly. Some animals don't do they.

congrats on your new snake!!!

yes, it does seem that you are getting some conflicting advice. that's pretty common in today's tech world where everyone can be their own expert. but, i've found that the people on here are so full of great info, and you can get many different views that you can make an educated decision on your own. which is why i keep comming back to this site. but, anyhoo...

fist, let your snake become accustomed to it's new surroundings. this is the same with a lot of pets. cats, dogs etc. all need to get used to their surroundings. so, i'd say let your snake stay in it's home for at least the first few days. what i do, to help it get accustomed to my smell, (this may seem weird, but i've done it will ALL of my snakes, and it has NO ill affects so why not do it) is put a used sock in it's viv. not a stinky one from the gym, but one i've worn for a day or so. that puts your smell in there 100% of the time without your snake being stressed at all!
you can not sex a snake until it is a bit older. vets can determine the sex of your snake, but i'm not sure how long they have to wait. you can probe and "pop"them, but i'd let only very experienced snake owners or vets do this. it's not something you want to play with. do a search on it, and you'll find lots of info on it.
on the drinking thing... yes your snake does need to drink often, so change the water to make sure it's clean. not 4 times a day or anything, but try to keep it fresh. once every couple of days or something. that will depend on the owner too. your water dish should be big enoug that your snake can submurse itself in water. it may need to do so to shed. BUT, make sure your snake can get out of the dish, you do not want it to drown! i have a normal bowl in mine, but fill it only so far with water. the bigger the snake, the more water i put in it. like i said, make sure it can get under water if it needs to bathe.

Yes I do look through older threads and do searches, it's quite helpful.

I guess I'm just excited and can't wait to hold him and stuff. When I lifted the lid of his hide earlier to show someone, whilst I was changing the water, he was getting really cross and trying to look 'fierce' at that point I thought he was best left alone for a while!

What time of day is best to handle him anyway, early evening?
 
as soon as you can get pics of him or her, take a pic of the underside of the tail from the vent to the end. lots of people here are pretty good at judging the sex of the snake based on the shape and length of the tail. course, this is easier to do when the snake is a bit older, but it doesn't hurt to try right?

congrats on your new little one! it's only a matter of time before you get more.... trust me. :)
