grapefruit seed extract

I was looking at a seller on this site and noticed that they put grapefruit seed extract in their corn's water. Why do this? I know it is an antiseptic but is there any other reason?

If you can change your snake's water every day or two, there is probably no reason to use it, unless you are concerned about a particular problem. But if you have a large collection and can only change water once or twice per week, it could help to keep down growth of microbes in the water in between water changes.

I don't think many people use it unless they suspect some of their animals are having a problem. You would find it at a health food store.
