GRAVEL

it wont hurt them unless they swallow it...if you use gravel then DO NOT feed the snakes in their tank. Otherwise I dont think they would just swallow it just for funzies

Paper towels and newspapers are perfect (except they don't look too pretty) and you can get them anywhere
 
Isn't gravel just like sand? I've read that you're not supposed to used sand as a substrate for corns. it's too dry and corns are not desert snakes. Why would you want to used gravel? Especially when Aspen and Newspaper is so readily available and cheap!

Gravel is like little stones. Personally I wouldn't use it but it's to you. Just feed snakes in a different container as the gravel can harm the snake if ingested.
