Hello, just a quick question.
After feeding my corn snake who is about a year and four months
old now, wants to eat my hand after he or she just finished eating.
I have a seperate feeding box for the snake. I handle the mice with
tweezers so I dont get the scent on me. After the snake is done eating
I let it out of the box onto the floor and let it wander around for a while.
When I get close to it it tries to bite me. I can see it being a reflex or
a instinct for the snake. Should I let let chomp me a few times to train
it? or will this be a common place??

Shane.

Some snakes stay in an aroused hunting mode after feeding, my granite Pearl is a nightmare for trying to tag me when I move her out of a feeding tub. i use the tub lid to deflect her worst efforts or leave her for 15 minutes or so when she's really grumpy

Just out of curiosity, why are you letting it out on the floor after it's finished eating? After eating, they need to be left alone aside from being transported back into their tank. He could be biting because you're letting him go on the floor, which is his idea of freedom, and most do not appreciate being caught after being 'free'. Or he could still be in 'hunt' mode.
Are you feeding the appropriate sized prey item? Maybe he's still hungry.

Thanks Teri, I didn't notice that! I'd never let my snakes 'wander about' after feeding either :shrugs:

He gets all excited the second the lands in his eating box, he gets all twitchy and sniffs around for his food. He knows it's in there!! I take him out so i can lessen the chance of getting bit. The floor is the place where he wanders about checking things out.
As for leting him find his way out of his box onto the floor for a couple of minutes I find nothing wrong with that. When he gets back into his viv the climbs all over his trees and logs, rubs his mouth on his cork log and cruises all over for about a half hour. After he is done all of that he goes and has a drink from his water dish and hangs out on top of his log. after all of that I don't see the harm letting him crawl out of his box onto the floor.
I feed him the mice next size up from pinkies. fuzzies? or hoppers? Im not sure.
He was eating three pinkies at one time. So I figured it was time to go bigger.
He is the most laid back snake besides that. Never jumps when you get him in his house.
If he is out wandering in his viv, you can put your hand in there and he climp up on you.

If you can get something small to feed him in so that you can place the whole feeding container into the terrarium it will be easier. Then he can get out by himself and you don't have to worry about being bit.

As far as letting him bite you a few times so he realizes your not food. I have a couple that will bite me every time just because they are so excited. So that idea won't necessarily work. GoodLuck. :)

I think Jen hit the nail on the head. I too have a few that will pop you no matter what you do. Rep. your way....

I don't undestand the purpose for a feed box I have seen many sites that states it is good and many sites that state it is not good. I have had snakes for over 30 yrs (and am always learning) my personal experience with feed boxes have had no beneficial results mainly due to the fact that the snake's primeval instinct is in feed mode and therefore ready to strike, so unless my substrate was anything less than desirable i always fed my snake in their habitat which also is far less stressful on the snake. Having said that most snake are in feed mode and even tame one's have been known to blindly strike due to this fact, remember there brains are fairly small and pretty much set to survival mode, I let my snakes alone for at the very least 2 days after eating before I handle them. I also have GTPs (which are known for biting) and have had excellent results with my methods also if they must be handled right after eating it is a good idea to wear a glove to help disguise the heat from your hand (the heat triggers the feed attack) just my 2 cents

same here, with the exception of hatchlings, I always feed in their enclosures. I never had a problem with them ingesting substrate. Gotta figure they eat in the dirt in the wild :)

i feed my corn in her enclosure and what i do so she dusn eat the substrate is dry the fuzzie so nuthin sticks to it :) (and they wudn eat wet mice in the wild anyway lol)

My snakes all are used to me serving them their f/t food on small lids such as those that come on cottage cheese, butter, cream cheese, and other similar containers. I use the gray cream cheese lids just because I have three snakes that won't eat if their f/t is served on any other kind of lids, for some reason they prefer these gray lids (maybe its easier to see the food against the gray color, I don't know). These lids are small enough to be convenient to use, big enough to hold the food, and easy to wash off.
