Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and to keeping snakes in general. Currently I do not own a corn snake but I will definitely be buying one in the near future. This is the primary reason I registered on this site; to get as much information about corn snakes & for support.

I've got a 79 gallon aquarium with pea gravel (which I used as substrate for my fish) as this was a tank used to house comet platies & 2 plecos. I'm hoping I can keep the pea gravel in the tank when I get my snake, but I will read some more threads about what type of substrate to use.

I plan on buying a "Combo Deep Dome Lamp Fixture" (I won't list the brand name as I don't want to advertise them ...not sure if that would be a violation of the terms of agreement) for the lighting. My aquarium currently has a glass top with a one of those long lights. From what I understand I have to get a terrarium top (the mesh kind) so air can circulate.

As far as being a pet owner, I guess you could say my love for animals started when I was kid with the stereotypical goldfish. I've had birds (budgies) when I was in my teens, and now...now I have :

- 1 Common Snapping Turtle
- 1 Alligator Snapping Turtle
- Comet Platies
- Guppies
- 2 Plecos
- 2 Red Ear Sliders
- 1 Eastern River Cooter

And soon.....1 corn snake. :D
 
Hello and welcome! from a fellow Ontarian, I've been to Brampton a few times. lol

I can see that your into reptiles, from your turtle collection you got going their, ;)
and I can tell you one thing your corn will feel like a breeze to take care of capared to all those turtles! lol :laugh: (I have always loved turtles, but the water changes are just too much for me!) lol

anywho! unfortunately you wont be able to keep your pebbles in your tank as corns LOVE to burrowing and make tunnels, and pebbles don't hold heat well or spot clean well for a snake.. ie, theirs a number of reasons why you wont see pebbles in peoples snakes tanks..

as for your light, you can name brands on here like zilla, zoo Med and so on people do it all the time, but most people recomend as well as myself, to use a UTH, hooked up a thermostat or rheostat.
your lights can be used to day time veiwing of the tank although your corn probably wont enjoy it much. lol as their most active at dusk and dawn. :)

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is a UTH? Is that the brand name? Knowing what you know now, can you make a recommendation to me strictly for lighting (providing a link)??? Perhaps there are lighting kits out there, that will include all the essentials (like the thermostat or rheostat plus the lighting itself). I don't want to buy the wrong thing. If you can't post links, perhaps you can send me a private message. I want to have time to research everything (to death) before I buy my snake.

As for the pea gravel in my tank, I don't mind removing it. I bought a few bags of Aspen bedding as I am planning on breeding mice; I've got a zoo going on at my place! ;)

Anyways...I appreciate this is the New Member Introductions area, so I'll post more regarding this in another (more appropriate sub-forum).
