Pumpkin D. Cat

Hello! I'm here to learn as much as I can before I buy my first snake. I have never kept reptiles before, so I'm a complete noob. I do have a willingness to learn, and I'm insatiable in my search for knowledge when I'm interested in a subject. I've done some research, and I've decided that a corn snake is the right snake for me.
I've had dogs, a ferret, and cats. My cat that was like my child died recently after being with me for 13 years. She was a beautiful old lady that can't be replaced. I do have another cat that I care for very much, but I have always been attracted to snakes.
My father, and his dad, my grandfather, are both terrified by snakes. I, on the other hand, grew up with an inquisitive nature about all animals. I don't fear, so much as respect them, like any wild animal.
I've had a few snake encounters in my life, mostly with rat snakes, and the like. A few years ago I had a close encounter with a rat snake in my apartment where I discovered what good climbers they are. I live in a second story apartment, and, at the time, I didn't have a washer, or dryer, so the hole for the dryer vent was open in my utility room. Apparently on just climbed up the hole into my apartment, then up a 6 foot bit of tree that I'd found fallen in the woods into the cabinets above. My tortiseshell cat tried to alert me to the snake, but I wasn't paying attention until it knocked a glass out of the cabinet, and it broke. Needless to say I was surprised to find a black snake in my apartment. After determining that it was most likely non-venomous I got some gloves, and grabbed it as close to the head as I could. It tried to bite, but was unsuccessful. I put it in a locking plastic tote, as I was getting ready for work, and was going to take it out, and release it the next day, but when I got home in the morning the little bastard had popped the lid, and escaped sometime in the night.
I'm here, as I said, to learn as much as I can so that I'm prepared when I finally get my first corn snake.
