Mother of Dragons
Hello, all!

My name is Daenerys, Mother of Dragons (kudos to anyone who know where that is from), and I am a new member here at cornsnakes.com

I joined because just a few weeks ago I got my first baby corn snake! Really the first reptile I've ever owned, before this I've only had dogs and cats. So, I have done some research but I happen to be very limited on access to things to care for reptiles with. For example, my baby corn snake (Drake) lives in a plastic tub that is normally used for storage of inanimate objects rather than living organisms. Don't worry, I put holes in the top so he gets plenty of air, and the lid is locking so he can't escape on me. He's not strong enough right now anyways. He's only about 12-14 inches long. Anyways, I use a towel for substrate, he really enjoys being able to burrow into that. And for humidity I sometimes place a shallow plastic cup-type thing with a thin layer of water in it inside his box.

I don't know what to do for temperature, though. I keep him in a locked cupboard because I live in a dorm building here at college and technically we're not allowed to have snakes. I got an irresistible offer, couldn't help myself :p Anyways, he stays in his cupboard and I only take him out for maybe 5 minutes a day when my roommate isn't around (she's scared of snakes). I'm not really sure what the temperature is in my room, though, because the thermostat doesn't say. Its settings are just "warmer" and "cooler" with the option of the fan being on or off. -__- So, what is the best temperature for keeping a corn snake? Do you think being able to burrow into a towel helps if the room temperature isn't perfect?

This is why I joined. I'm an amateur corn snake owner, and I need some guidance!

Firstly, Congrats on your new baby and welcome to the forum!! You've come to the right place for all your questions...

Second, how big is the plastic tub you have your baby in? And what you say 'towel for substrate' are you talking about the towels humans use to dry themselves off after showers? Or are you using paper towels? If you are using towels that humans use to dry themselves off with, it's probably better if you take that out and switch it for either paper towels or newspaper. And on a side note, corn snakes don't really need humidity unless they are shedding.

The temperature you should keep your corn snake at are 75-85F. They like temperature gradients, but you don't necessarily have to provide one. I believe I've read somewhere saying that if you can stand in the room your snake is in with a t-shirt on and be comfortable, then it's an okay temp for your snake. You should probably go out and buy a probe thermometer from somewhere like Walmart for cheap to be able to monitor the temps accurately.

Just my opinion, but I don't think hiding your baby corn away in a cupboard is very ideal.... I don't know, think of it as if you were locked away in a cupboard all day, everyday, regardless if you take it out for only 5 mins a day.:awcrap:

Anyway, I hope I've helped. If you have any more questions, don't be afraid to ask! We are here to help :)

Daeni...welcome...I'm new too...another Georrge Martin fan. I'll probably have a few more snakes before George gets the next book out but still waiting, he's a top notch author for all that.

WELCOME... but I think we've seen lots of you already! :p

As for George... He takes SOOOOOOOOOO long to get his books out, that I almost forget what the previous book was even about.... so I'm waiting until he's DONE before I re-read them. LOL.
