Hairless and natals

schilsound

getting out of hand.
I looked and realized that I have been lurking for a while, and thought I'd take a minute to upload some of my/our collection here.

Both of these colonies are housed in some really neat containers I am going to post in a later thread

Aaaaaaand the natals.

Gerbils, Siamese, fancy rats and fancy mice all to follow, along with some really incredible containers that they're housed in.

Nice rats there. Are they true hairless or double rex? I just got a hairless pup and I'm wondering if there's any way to tell which type it is. I guess I won't know for sure until I can breed him. I'm hoping he's a double rex as I wanted to breed rex into my rats anyway and they have less health issues than true hairless.

True hairless rats are born hairless. They dont even get whiskers. I saw your pic Flagg and thats a double rex rat. As it gets older it loses that fur and gets the 'hairless' look.

Schilsound, awesome natal rats. They would be even cuter if they werent so mean!

Edited to add: true hairless rats sometimes do have fur, but lose it at around 2-3 months, including whiskers.

But 90% of rats in the feeder/pet trade are actually double rex, as its very difficult to breed true hairless as the females are horrible mothers.

Well, I don't mean to hijack this thread... since the hairless genes are all recessives, they very well could pop up occasinally in normal coat rat breeders, so it could be a hairless and not double rex. I didn't notice any rexes in his tubs that he had for sale. I'll ask him next show if he has any rex breeders.

Nice natals & can't wait to see the rest of your animals & cages. Not sure about the hairless, strange looking things but then they have nearly as much hair as me.......lol.......

:-offtopic Sorry, but i just want to know if there is a way to tell hairless pinks from normal pinks? Or do you have to wait until they get hair? Or in this case stay hairless...

One sure way is if you've got a mixed bag- your normal/fancy rats will grow exponentially faster than your hairless.

And you should know in just a couple weeks what you're looking at.

If you're talking about true hairless [the super-weak, non-lactating mother kinda hairless] you'll know because your pinks will never get any milk show in their guts and hence will die off!

bad joke, bad joke. . .
