Haku - Opal Corn (progression thread)

Meet Haku!! He's named after the boy/dragon/river spirit in Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirited_Away)

He is an opal morph corn snake from BHB Reptiles. I am a huge fan of progression threads, and don't recall seeing any for the opal morph...

I had some trouble going back and forth between getting a boy or a girl, changed my order to a girl, but was accidentally shipped the boy....not upset one bit b/c the lil bugger has grown on me very quickly. He came yesterday, I don't have many good photos as I want to give him time to settle in. (The camera isn't picking up the subtle shades of lavender already showing on his saddles)

Unknown hets, estimated hatch date July 22nd.

Here is the photo that BHB sent me while picking them out.

And here is the photo of him outside of his tank. Little bugger was trying to play escape artist!! (It's actually part of my unboxing video which I need to edit and get up on youtube...)

I snapped this one - quietly...later. He seems to have found the "favorite corn spot" (The cage has a very very heavy stone paver on it, he's not going anywhere)

Next update will be in a week to let everyone know if he's eating ok...and then a few days after that I can try and handle him!!

Just a quick update - he ate!!!! I brought him the smallest thawed pink I had, no hesitation to strike. It took me being -extremely- quiet for him to eat it but...I'm so excited!!! I'm going to give him a few days to digest and then hopefully I should be able to get some more/better photos of me holding him :) From what I can tell he seems very sweet and docile..if a bit shy...

He's a cutie. I think you did the right thing not exchanging him for the female. They're both going to end up almost white anyway, so best to stay with a friendly guy.

First time picking him up tonight!! Little brat musked me! :eek1: Anyway, after I got him out of the cage he seemed to calm down a little. I'm hoping after a few 5 min sessions of this once or twice a day he'll get the idea that I really don't want to hurt him, let alone eat him, etc.

Here's a photo I took of me holding him.

He is beautiful! I should start one of these progression threads with my new baby. Still need to decide on a name for mine. I want to eventually get a snow corn and want to do like a fire and ice theme. Is this your first corn? You made a gorgeous choice!

He is my second corn. I have a full grown adult female (normal morph). Her name is Calypso, she's about 5 years old.

In regards to Haku, got a really nice photo of him tonight...after i got musked on again. Sigh. He moves really fast - the second I snapped this, I was trying to get a second, and he was off the tree and back to hiding. (That's why his face is slightly blurry)

He is very pretty! and looks like he is doing fantastic!! I already want another one lol! But I do want to wait a little while and get everything into place with our new one and learn some more about them and get a routine! How was your transaction and service through BHB Reptiles? I have been looking at them and they look like they have some beautiful snakes. Thanks for sharing your little guy!

BHB was awesome! Very friendly and understanding that I was nervous about having the little guy shipped. Answered all of my questions, very professional. Prompt communication...and the fact that I (so far) have had no issues at all with my little one makes me very happy. Haku ate again last night - this time with a bit more gusto....it seems that if I flip his little "house" upside down so he has a place to curl up and feel secure I can convince him to eat (and let me watch). Here's a photo of the last meal. The lighting was bad so I had to use the flash, he didn't seem to mind, just a pause of...what was that? And then proceeded to start eating the pinkie...(this was after he struck at it and coiled around/"killed" it...

I also had a successful no nippy, no musking handling session today. :dancer:

I'm wondering if he was feisty before because he was hungry? Either that or repeated daily handling sessions are getting it through his head that I have no interest in hurting him...he actually seemed curious today and less defensive...which allowed me to get a really nice (in focus) photo of him. The colors are pretty accurate here as well.

Just a quick update, we have a successful first shed!!! Being able to tell when a corn with red eyes is going to shed is a bit tricky!! Much easier to tell with Calypso...his overall colors haven't changed that much yet....just a little more peachish?

Anyway, here's pre-shed. I'll through post-shed photos up tomorrow when the lighting is better
