Handling multiple corns

I've come back from a reptile show today with 2 more corn snakes... so I'll 4 in all! (Hmmm.. they are addictive!)

I was wondering how people with mulitple corn snakes handle theirs? I know you have to handle hatchlings so they can get use to humans, so do you handle them all every day (what do breeders do with all their babies)? Currently I handle my 'original' 2 for about 1/2 hour a day everyday! Is this too much? Do they need exercise everyday or will every few days work just as well (so I can alternate between 2 and 2)?

Well the two new snakes need to be quarentined from the rest of yours, so they should be the last things you touch when dealing with your snakes. They need to be kept in seperate areas etc.

As for handling, breeders who have tons and tons of snakes don't spend all day "playing" with their snakes, for the most part they just get down to business and take care of them.

As for handling them "every day" you should not be handling them for at least 48hrs after eatting.

And for brand new hatchlings your gonna have to feel them out, most of them won't tolerate being held for 30 minutes straight right away, you've gotta ease them in.

I was thinking more about the future when the newbies have settled in. I know about the no-handling-post-feed-for-48-hours and all are in their individual tubs anyway. I built up handling time with my original 2 when I bought them so I'll be doing the same with the 2 newbies once they're settled and out-and-about in their tubs. But handle everyday or not handle everyday?

I should really get my partner involved to help me exercise the corns. Unfortunately he's still scared of them and won't even touch them. (He's got that 'they're slimey/ going to bite me/ they are venomous!' mentality going like most people scared of snakes...)

Snakes need excercise? What do they need to do for excercise?
Well, not exercise per se, but I like to handle my corns to keep them active/ tone them up, so to speak (they go for a swim occasionally too). Slithering around in a vivarium/ tub can get a bit boring. Cos they're still small, I can use my fingers as a slalom course! :)

each of my snakes get handled at least twice a week for
20min at a time, I enjoy my snakes and spend alot of time with them
to make sure they are all cared for properly.

Don't worry - snakes don't have the capacity to get bored. They stay safe, stay the right temperature, eat, drink and mate. That's what they're designed to do, and as long as they have the facilities to do that, they're fine.

You can encourage movement and maintenance of muscle tone by offering things like climbing branches, but there's no way of making them work out. Regular handling is fine for those that will tolerate it, but some won't.

how will you know if your snake wont handle the handling? will it bite you? what are the signs?

I know that after about 30 minutes my corn starts getting restless. He gets really really active. Thats when I know its time to put him back in his viv.

Hey, I'm really offended by that. I sleep, watch TV, go fishing.... Men can be very deep and complex if you look beyond the surface.
