Happy New Corn Owner!

I recently (2 1/2 weeks ago) purchased my first creamsicle corn snake. I couldn't be more excited!! I have been lurking here reading up on corn care and such and set up my little one in a 10 gallon tank with aspen bedding, two hides (one on the cold, one on the hot), a climbing tree (which I could kick myself for since she loves to climb the branch and attempt to wedge herself between the lid and the tank), and of course the requisite water bowl. I never realized a little $20 snake could cost so much in correct accessories! Oh yes, I also purchased an UTH and an Acu-Rite therm/hygro with duel temp readings. I'm was a little behind in ordering the thermostat though and should hopefully receive it any day now (to avoid constantly checking my temps like a neurotic mother checking to see if her infant is still breathing in the bassinet...ok, I hope I'm not the only mom that did that?? :) )

I still cannot think of a name for her...I'm drained after finally naming all 11 of the crested geckos I've collected over the past 5 months! I'm hoping to get two more corns (Hypo Blood Red, Hypo Lavender, and striped) at the upcoming MARS show...I've become hopelessly addicted!

Additionally, I'm looking into a breeding in the area to pick up a male Pastel BP...

I've wanted to own snakes for so long and only recently received permission from my husband so I'm starting somewhat with a bang here!

Just wanted to introduce myself and I look forward to learning and sharing with you all!! :)

Feeds!

I forgot to add that my little lady has also eaten twice! I picked up my girl on 8/6 (she was born 8/1) and she fed on 8/8 and then again on 8/16 (one pinky each time). I've been reading that hatchlings should feed on a 5 day schedule so think I will try to entice her to eat a little more frequently. Any suggestions appreciated!

Congrats Wendy, and welcome to the forums! We want pics! You'll have a great time with us on her. We have lots of fun :)

I love the look of the creamsicles, but I will tell you(in case you didn't already know) that they are a hybrid cross between an emoryi and a corn snake...so she's about 50% corn. But I'm sure she's 100% awesome :) Congrats!

Congrats & welcome! Its nice to have someone else get addicted as quickly as I did! Please post some pics when you have time - we'd love to see the new babies!
(I've been looking at the crested's lately too - they're cute!)

Congratsm we should be getting ours soon. I've always wanted to name a snake Wig, but my brother has already names ours. Gordon. pfft.

Thanks!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I did find out that the creamsicle was a cross! It was interesting. One place I read that it was crossed back in the seventies, then I got confused whether all creamsicles were crossed now or from those long ago pairings...

I will get hopping on the digital camera and post pics of the little string bean she is...My friend, who breeds ball pythons, has called her all sorts of mean little names (friendly ribbing and all ;) ). Thanks again!

Wendy

Welcome to the forums and to the joy of corn (and cross) ownership! Legoless is a normal, we believe male, and coming up not to long on his first birthday! He's grown SO much!! Enjoy your acquisition, and have fun naming!

OoO how exciting, welcome. I love naming, and would love to see pics. Here's for starters: Sahara, Kida, Sarabi, Trixie, Indy, Neo, Ace, or Ty

Congrats on your one of many to come. i officially welcome you to the addictied :crazy02:

It is truly!! I'm trying to be calm and levelheaded but then I just keep drifting back to the morphs on various sites and start planning on stealing my kids college funds to set up a herp room!

At least I seem to be in good company! :D

LOL!! Sorry, I'll have to wish for your brother to have a change of heart for you!! ;) Of course you could also insist that you must also have your own snake and that your brother is already too attached to your soon to be little...or you could claim that you really need a matched set, two is always better than one! :D

I believe they can reproduce but many don't want to. I was reading a thread here that many breeders won't breed Creams back into regular corns as they have "mixed" blood. So it seems they can but many won't do it.

wait college savings i never thought of that... come on snap out of it what are you thinking.. I'm thinking bloodred, lavender, hypo. striped, motley.. oh thanks now I'm really in trouble.. i guess you cant stay married for ever.

hi wendy am a new owner to just wanted to say hi and if you have any info you would like to share that would be good

I am desperate for the MARS show in Sept! I want more snakes now!!!! ;)Actually, I plan on using my herp obsession in the classroom. I'm a bio teacher and I will keep the snakes at school (in a back up room where no students may go!). They'll come out every now and then for various projects (our what's living and what's not living lab, makes it more exciting to have real living organisms to observe). Also, I would like to breed on a very small scale and have students observe and record physical traits of both parents and then observe and record physical traits of the offspring. They then have to perform punnett squares and do statisical analysis to determine what type of inheritence the physical traits are and how many are working together to create each phenotype!! Long term project, but I'm hoping it will get the kids more interested in genetics and also help them realize real applications of what they are learning! :D

Wow, that sounds really great Wendy! I especially like the idea of getting the kids learning about genetics. :) I wish my teacher would have done something like that.

My personal recommendation would be to do something like this:

Get an Amel het Anery and an Anery het Amel

Amel het Anery(aa·aa , An+·ana) x Anery het Amel(A+·aa , ana·ana)
Results:
25% Normals het for Anery/Amel (snow)
25% Anerys het for Amel
25% Amels het for Anery
25% Snows

I think that the fun part would be to not let the kids find out what the homo Amel and Anery snakes will look like, but they will have figured out this simple punnett and seen that 25% of them will show both traits. Sure maybe some will figure it out on their own time, but it would be fun to have those little snows pop out and the kids go, "cool!" With as common of a snake as those are, you should be able to find them at cheap cheap prices. and you will get a good variety in the initial breeding :)

Man, I'm getting excited for ya already! :D
