Harlan ICR Mice

Do many people use these and how do they do? Do these mice really have better reproductive patterns? I want to start a colony to support my snake habit and would like the best output possible.

thanks

Dawn

where would you get one of these lab strains of mice? I've seen a couple sites for labs that sell them but they don't appear to sell to the general public.

I too would be interested in buying some mice that produced high numbers in litters. I haven't found a place to buy mice like that yet.

Funny you should say that- I just bought a supplimental colony of Harlan ICR's. They are genetically selected- [genetics through breeding, not through some oddball genetics lab that allows the placement of a third leg or additional eyesockets. . . !] females for larger litters, better recovery from littering, and the males purportedly have some ridiculous sperm count.

If you guys are interested in buying some in quantity PM me- I will see how many I can ship, etc- haven't got enough rodents myself but my buddy has a barn full, all overflowing to the gills, ready and waiting for his adults to come out of nappy-time- I might be able to help some folks out.

Wow!

Thanks all for the response- it looks like I should start breeding mice as a sideline!

Right now I won't be able to fill the supplies I have been asked for, I can tell you that much- I was anticipating something on the order of 25-50 mice total, and a few people have expressed interest in at least that many each for themselves.

So I have an alternate option that I will have to call about- the friend of mine who raises/feeds with the harlans also has a friend in the rodent business- his dad!

I know the father is building a very large pole barn [something like 4o' or more] to house his rodents and wants to go full-time with them, so he'll be able to handle larger stock orders for IRC's and other breeder mice.

I'll get his info and either broker sales on here if he's not interested [not too sure if he's online capable or not] or post info about purchasing larger quantities of the live adults.

Thanks again, and just be patient with me as I find out the data as I can. One interesting fact is that Harlan is in Indianapolis, about an hour from my house, so I guess if nothing else I could get some myself to filla specific order as need be, but from the looks of their 'site they're marketing to labs and universities, scientific institutions primarily;

not too sure if they'd like a walkup purchase or two from a snake breeder ;]

Thanks again, all- will post data as I get it.

I've contacted them before and they do sell to private citizens, and the guy I talked to didn't seem the least bit deterred that I raised snakes. They sell rodents, I don't think they care what you do with them in the end so long as they get the money for it. And if you want to feed your snake $5 mice, I don't think they'll have a problem with it.

Their prices were the only deterrant for me to order for just myself. But maybe in a large enough order, the price would be more comparable. If enough people chime in for how many they want, I'm sure we could get the bulk pricing and then just split it from there.

I contacted them last fall asking about myco-resistant mice, to see if it was developed and if it was for sale. But sadly, they don't have myco resistant mice.

You may talk to Quigs. I think he purchased his founding stock from Harlan, so he could probably point you in the right direction as to who to talk to, how much shipping was, etc.

yeah that's why I mentioned this guy's dad, Misty- I am pretty sure the price is gonna be lower than the standard Harlan rate since they are "Harlan Line" instead of the direct stock from their own tubs.

In fact the ones I am talking about eat only Harlan food [as do mine] so it wouldn;t be much different EXCEPT maybe the differences in climate control at the Harlan facility, etc etc.

Everyone is welcome to do what they wish; I am gonna just hafta wait to hear back and see if this thing with the father pans out. . . may end up being a great deal ;]

yes; they are the ones I have, and I think the shipping is pretty steep- you're talking about overnight with a much larger volume of package than snakes, which average $40 or so. . .

. . . so if you're talking about shipping 30-40 mice you're talking about close to $15o or so.
